Junior Year

Hello,

I listed my schedule for my junior. Due to the large importance of this year, I would greatly appreciate any and all advice and tips. My goal career is a surgeon, so if there are any classes that you would recommend taking in high school for pre-med. Would you recommend a physics course instead? I am planning on taking AP Biology senior year. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Schedule:
AP Calculus BC
AP Chemistry
AP United States History
AP Statistics
AP Environmental Sciences
AP English
Latin 3
Lifeguarding/Orchestra

I take a heavier science schedule in school as well, but holy crud there is no reason you need to take 6 AP classes. Perhaps forget AP U.S. and AP Environmental isn't that helpful. If your school has them take some anatomy courses, I do and they are way helpful. The MCAT has some physics on it, but I wouldn't stress, a lot of colleges won't even give credit for AP Physics so I wouldn't take it.
Remember colleges are impressed by quality, not quantity!

Iw ould take AP Physics. A lot of pre-med programs require a background in Physics. I would probably drop Environmental for AP Physics. I would als drop BC for AB. A load like that (at my school at least) requires a lot of time and work. Next year you could take BC (because there are any higher level sequences.)

Thank-you for the advice.

Sungchul: Thank-you so much for the tip about the pre-med programs. I already took AB Calc this year.

Mike0982: Thank-you so much for the advice. Actually, my favorite school subject is anatomy, however my school does not offer it in high school.

I wouldn't recommend an AP Physics course unless you are planning an undergrad major in math/physics/engineering. I'm pretty sure you usually need
around 12 hours of physics for med school, but that's what college is for. Unless you're planning on doing a 6/7 year med school program, either take the AP B class or wait until college. Unless you really love Physics, I wouldn't take C as it's notoriously hard.

I'd take AP Biology sometimes in the next two years. You might also want to consider AP Psychology. It's pretty easy for an AP course and a good background for medical study.

Basically, take a challenging curriculum of things you like to do. Don't sign up for a class you know you'll be miserable in just because you want more APs for your transcript. Junior year is usually the hardest year of high school, and you really don't need to make it any harder than it needs to be.

I don't know much about Environmental Science, but what you've got listed there is fine. You might not have a whole lot of free time next year, but that's a good well rounded curriculum should you change your mind about becoming a doctor.

You are insane. But if you can handle it, what-ev.

I think you don't have enough AP's ;-)
