How difficult is AP Comp Sci A for someone with no background at all?

Harder than most AP's if you don't have any background. If you work outside of class too you should be fine.

My teacher didn't assign any homework and he had a 93% passrate, but most of us had some kind of computer programming background.

don't need that much background...

but, like flippy said, if you work outside of class, you should be fine

I took this course last year in my senior year of high school. If you don't have background, it will be, admittedly, pretty tough. I had some experience in HTML/PHP as well as C, so Java was not all that tough for me. The coursework is pretty intense though, so if you are slow at typing or anything like that I don't recommend it. It really was intense for me, about 2-3 hours each day just on that course.

CS A should be pretty easy, I think. You don't really need to know any of the data structures that you need for AB. Just remember that you need to learn the case study. There is a new one this year, and I don't know what it is. Last year was the Marine Biology Case Study, and I have heard that this year's case study is fairly similar.
I got a 5 on AB last year without much work, but I didn't self-teach.

This year the case study is going to become GridWorld from MBCS...
