Neither English test counts for anything. Sorry :-(

really? doesn't the penn website say they give credit for a 5 on the AP eng test?

...which is a free elective, which is absolutely worthless when it comes to filling in requirements.

you can use 1 english AP test to fulfill a Language Arts and Culture requirement under General distribution; go to page 14 in the document linked

I see. Then are there a minimum number of electives we must take? Because if so, the credit from the test could go towards that.

You need a certain number of electives, but they usually need to be in certain areas. A free elective credit doesn't really help because it usually doesn't meet one of those categories, and most Penn students have no trouble finding a course or two they want to take. If you're at the point where you have no electives you'd like to take, is college really the right decision for you?

Is it worth reporting a 3 for AP Euro? I took it sophomore year but it got separated from my Junior year AP grades. Is it worth reporting it on the App and having to send it in later on its own, even though I won't get credit for it? Or should I report it and just not send it in because it's on its own? Would they care if I reported it but it won't be included in my AP score report that I send?

You can self-report it on the application, and you don't need to bother sending in the official score report. They won't care (AP scores aren't that significant in the app process because they're self-reported).

Matt, it seems that you are very knowledgeable on this stuff. Do you have any advice on which tests I should take this year?

My APs are the following:

11th grade: AP Lang/Comp (4), AP Calc AB (5), AP US Hist (5)....so only 1 credit there
12th grade: AP lit, AP stats, AP Calc bc, AP spanish, AP gov, AP Bio

I am definitely, taking AP Stats, Calc Spanish and Bio. Not taking Gov since Penn doesn't give credit. You have said that the English Freshman Free is generally not worth it. I am not very confident I can get a 5 since my teacher isnt that great, and I am going to Wharton. Do you think I should take it? What value, if any, does it have?

Also, if I get 5s on stat, calc, spanish and Bio, my total C.U. count coming in would be 8? (since spanish gives 4 c.u.s right?) If 8, would that mean I need to do 29 C.U.s while at wharton?

I'm assuming you know you're going to Wharton. (This is directed to everyone: if you aren't 100% certain of the university you'll be attending, your strategy should look different)

Don't take the ap lit test. Spend more time studying for the others, as english free doesn't help much at all, and it sounds like you don't think you'll get a 5 - you need 5's on those other tests more.

WRT count: you'd need an absolute minimum of 29 classes, but you'll probably end up needing more, as the requirements for graduation will likely put you over. It's not worth worrying about this kind of thing though.

Hey Matt, I’m going to be a SEAS 2013 student at Penn, and am considering the dual degree program with Wharton. I was wondering if you could help me out like you did with ivy24, in what APs give credit/are helpful to meeting requirements for dual degree in 4 years.

I have 5’s on all my AP’s so far
My APs are the following:
Complete: Lang/Comp, US Government, Comp Sci AB, BC Calc, World History, Statistics, Biology, Macroecon, Microecon.
To be taken: chemistry, physics c, Comparative government.

I probably will be dropping comp. gov because I’ve heard it won’t help me. How about chem/physics? And earlier in the thread you said English counts as a free elective - could it possibly help me receive the 46-48 credits needed for a dual degree (potentially)

Thanks a lot in advance

Does anyone know anything about the Japanese placement test? I plan on continuing it, but I couldn’t take the SAT II it in because it’s only offered in November and I was IN Japan. That site linked in this thread didn’t say anything about the placement test…I’m assuming I’d be in the 300’s level (since my friend who took a year less of Japanese than me at my school got into 300’s at Columbia), unless the test requires a lot of handwriting, since I don’t actually remember how to write a lot of the characters.

Also, how does 5.5 c.u.s (max) work? As in, the .5…? Since I’ll be taking math 104 (finished math almost to the end of BC–my school is weird–but I didn’t take the BC exam, although I haven’t done math since 11th grade) and I’ve already done a lot of it, I’m assuming it will be pretty easy.

just a few questions…

does an A+ in a class get weighed in as 4.33??

is math 104 really competitive or really hard to get good grades in??

what type of people usually go into math 103??

what required courses do you need if you are transferring into wharton??

~I heard before that it was math 104, econ 001, econ 002,

BUT someone here just said that whartonites take econ 010 instead, so…

I was wondering where I should prioritize studying as well at Wharton…
Here are my APs.
Studio Art (I imagine useless)
Calc AB (you said, no credit)
Spanish (good to do well on) (PS: If I got a 760 on the SATII, will this do the same thing for me as getting a 5 or what?)
Biology
Macroeconomics
Psychology
Eng. Literature

and last year I had eng. language and us history and got 5s, will these help?
and when it says I can get credit for something like bio, does that mean I just have to take a more advanced class or does it mean I can actually get out of one of the general distribution curriculum requirements? Because as much as I don’t want to study for bio, it would be excellent to get out of these because I don’t want to take any sciences.
Thanks, I really really appreciate it! I want to know where I don’t need to study at all and where studying will save me from those hard, competitive intro courses.

~ Alex

quick question for anyone currently a student… Is it normal to take 4 c.u.s first semester freshman year to get adjusted to school?

Does anyone know anything about the Japanese placement test?
They should offer placement tests during NSO. See [Which beginning Japanese course should you take](http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~hsherry/choice.htm)

Also, how does 5.5 c.u.s (max) work? As in, the .5…?
The 0.5 CU is for lab courses. For science courses there’s the lecture component and the lab component; the lecture component is typically given 1.0CU, while the lab is 0.5CU

1. does an A+ in a class get weighed in as 4.33??
No, it’s given the same weight as an A (4.0)

*2. is math 104 really competitive or really hard to get good grades in??
*
I’ve heard it’s competitive because a lot of people in it have taken Calc BC and have seen the material. I don’t have any personal experience because I jumped straight into 114 (I had taken IB Math HL in high school, but didn’t score high enough to qualify for credit. I find the class to be manageable though)

3. what type of people usually go into math 103??
My friend’s in the course now, and she had not taken calc in high school. I think her high school math covered some differentiation, but no integration. On the other hand, my other friend had a similar background in calc (no integration) but went into 104 and still did reasonably well.

4. what required courses do you need if you are transferring into wharton??
See [Penn Admissions: Transferring into the Wharton School](http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/applying/transwharton.php) for requirements.

*Is it normal to take 4 c.u.s first semester freshman year to get adjusted to school? *
In the college, 4.0-4.5Cu is typical. Think engineers generally take 5.0-5.5 even during first semester.

Which is easier to do well in

econ 001+ econ 002

or

econ 010

and which one do the freshman whartonites do??

freshman whartonites take econ 010

purely by class size / averages econ 001 + 002 are probably easier

mattwonder, i pm-ed you for some guidance. Thanks in advance!

I’m bumping this thread because I found it really hopeful for answering beginner class registration/AP credit questions, since most of us got our PennKeys and will begin browsing through courses at this point.
