AP Credit and Starting Level of Science Classes

I think I remember reading a discussion about whether to use AP credit for the basic science classes (Biology, Chemistry,Physics) and start at a higher level -or not. I can't find this discussion but I think some students suggested that the classes were so different than h.s. that even students who made 4 or 5s on the AP should start at the beginning to get a solid foundation - especially for science majors/pre med. Is this true? Also
1. Should it matter if a student got a 4 vs. a 5?
2. Should it matter if it is bio versus chem versus physics?
Could current students (and Bernie, of course) let me know what you think and any other information that might be helpful. I apologize if this topic has been discussed many times and I just can't find it. Thanks.

If you are thinking of going to medical school, it is good to look at a websites of the schools you are interested. You may find they all treat AP science credits differently. thesis what Emory states for medical school:

Emory will accept some Advanced Placement (AP) credit, as long as the credits appear on a college transcript. If you have AP credit in any of the science areas, it is recommended that you complete an upper level course to maintain your knowledge in that area.

John Hopkins states:

For Biology: Credit for advanced placement is not acceptable as a substitute. Individuals who have completed their studies in biology more than 4 years prior to their application are strongly advised to take a one semester advanced mammalian (molecular) biology course.

For Chemistry: Applicants with advanced placement in general chemistry can receive 4 semester hours of credit toward this requirement. An additional 4 semester hours in advanced chemistry will be necessary.

For Physics: Advanced Placement credit for physics, if acceptable to the student’s undergraduate college, may be used in fulfillment of the physics requirement.

Thus it can be different for each medical school and can change. Also consult the Emory Pre-Med office. They should be able to give you some good advice. You can only have a certain amount of AP credits. If you have them for writing and other subjects…it might be better to use them for those classes.

Good luck.
