So I have been reviewing this website to determine how much credit I can get from my AP exams, but I'm still a little confused. I was wondering if anyone could help me clear up a few things.

http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/pdf_10/exam-credit.pdf

I got a 5 on BC Calc, so does that mean that I actually get credit for MATH 15100-15200, as in I now need fewer classes to graduate (that's two quarters, correct?). I also got 4's on World History and English Language and a 5 on US History. I am taking English Literature this year and can guarantee at least a 4 on it. So according to that website, I would get credits for 4 electives of 3 quarters each. In addition, I am taking the Physics C: Mechanics exam this year. I'm not sure what I'll get, though I'm thinking a 4 would be a fair assessment (maybe a 5). That would knock out PHYS 12100.

So based on that, does that mean that I would get actual credit for a total of 15 quarters? I know at some schools, AP credit is only used for placement purposes (ie. I would get out of lower classes, but I'd still have to complete the same number of total courses). Is that how Chicago works, or do I actually need fewer classes to graduate because of AP?

Can anyone also explain to me the total number of credits needed to graduate? I've been searching all over the Chicago website and can't find it laid out nicely anywhere.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure about the rest but chicago doesn’t seem to give anything for eng lit or Lang exams… I’m nottaking the lit exam.

Well, at the bottom of their list, they said “Other - 4 or 5 - 3 quarters credit.” So I took that to mean that, aside from the classes listed under the footnote such as EnviSci and Psych, a 4 or 5 on any AP exam that wasn’t listed will give you 3 quarters of elective credit. That’s where I was counting classes such as Lang, Lit, World, and US.

… but only up to a maximum of 6 elective credits.

So, a 4 or 5 on two exams will give you the maximum elective credits.

Also, when it says x amount of quarters, it doesn’t mean you get to skip out entirely on those quarters. It means one class. So, “3 quarters of elective credit” actually means 3 classes.

Insomniac, although your calculations are incorrect you still would enter first year with course credit already. I entered with 6 elective credits. Because of my major, I could have graduated a full year early had I wanted to.

Oh okay, sorry. So I would count two AP classes as electives (6 credits), the BC Calc class, and the Physics class (if I get a 4 or a 5). Is that correct? So, based on that, would it be possible to graduate a full year early?

I thought of another related question!

I’m interested in doing the program with Pritzker where you can start medical school senior year (assuming superb stats and acceptance into the program). If I used my AP classes to get me out of a year of study, would that affect my chances of admission into this program?

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to spend four years as an undergraduate at Chicago, but it’s a bit pricey, so I’m exploring alternative options.
