AP Credit: Was it worth it?

well considering i’m getting TEN freaking credits for a score of 4 on ap calculus ab, that was definitely worth it. and the other 4 ap classes could mean that i’ll never have to take another intro class again, in addition to never taking another math class. :)

Yes.
I am (bitterly) taking a semester of physics this year as a freshman to get my requirements out of the way after I only received one semester credit of physics (I got a 4, they needed a 5…grr). But I will soon have a nice A (or maybe A+!) on my transcript in a 4 credit class for physics because my ap class prepared me so well…which may be worth more than getting credit.

My APs were sooooo worth it.

I was able to place out of general chem and place straight into honors organic. It waived my calc sequence and my intro bio course. All my humanities type AP’s filled up gen eds. Plus a lot of people have to struggle just to get all the credits they need for their major to graduate in 4 years, but with my AP’s I have a lot of wiggle room so I can do the minor I wanted to do in political science (I’m a biology major). And I, like others here, get higher standing for class registration.

APs are the greatest

I got 15 credits (about 1 semester of college) from taking just Physics C. AP’s are amazing.

Hell yes. It gave me so many credits in the system. And I was exempt from so many gen eds. Thank G-d.

Does having AP credits look good or bad on your transcript when applying to graduate school?

10?!?! wow, you’re an overachiever :)

i myself took 3 AP tests, and even that helped me sooo much. because of them, i’m already much closer to my degree than a good portion of my friends who didn’t take APs. plus they put my at sophomore status by the end of my first semester of college, so when it came time to draw numbers for our housing lottery this semester, i got to pull as one of next year’s juniors despite the fact that i’m only a freshman, and therefore got into the second-best upperclassman dorm on campus (the best is mainly saved for seniors). i’d say that’s the nicest benefit of all. :)

Wow. I am the only person here who WANTS to take Gen Eds. That seems like one of the best parts to me…

To throw out another question specifically for Engineering majors: Since calc/chem/physics are kind of building block classes for Engineering is it wise to take credit for them? Or is it better to retake them?

Depends on how well you know the material. If you have a decent calc teacher, I see no reason to retake calc.

By the end of this year, I’ll have taken 10 AP tests, and don’t plan to use any of the credits I could’ve earned, because I’m going to med school (hopefully anyway…). They don’t take AP credit, unless you want to take a higher level course in the same subject. I figure heck, I’ll take the AP course because it’s challenging, and it’ll give me a good basis of knowledge for freshmen year, and so I’ll be less stressed because everything won’t be totally new material.

It also doesn’t hurt that my school doesn’t make you take finals if you take AP tests…

Grad schools don’t care about AP credits at all; hell they won’t even know you took them.

The point is you cash out big time in undergrad. And taking APs will probably help you into a good undergrad, which grad schools will look at.

The point of APs is that you can take the courses you want to take in college, although some universities accept a cap on APs or they are a lot more restrictive than others.

And personally, my university accepts APs easily, but absolutely refuses to grant transfer credit from community colleges (when not fully enrolled - ie, taken concurrently in h.s.). Oh well, I didn’t get credit for multivar Calc or Diff EQ - it’s not like I remember that stuff anyway, lol.

I took 8 APs total. I got 5 5’s, 2 4’s and one 3. My school doesn’t give AP credit, just placement into higher levels. But yes, i think it was worth it. The AP classes, at least in my high school had the more motivated students, which makes a big difference. the quality of classmates are very important. I also got to place into higher levels of science, which are more interesting. If i could have, at least senior year when i knew my college wouldn’t give credit, i would have taken the class without the AP test, but my school didn’t allow that. but overall, i think AP classes were better than honors classes in hs and placing into higher levels in college was also good.

For me they weren’t worth it. My college (Pomona) doesn’t really use Ap’s. However, I would take the AP classes over again to look good for colleges, just not the tests (unfortunately however, in my high school if you take the class you must take the test or else you fail the class).
