AP credit

I am considering attending Berkeley next year and am attempting to figure out which AP credits can exempt me from core requirements. I received a 5 on the Calc AB exam; is this enough to fulfill any calculus prerequisites at Cal, or should I take the Calc BC exam? I was accepted to L&S, and plan to major in English, political science, or something else non-math related.

Also, what will 5's on the AP Lang and Comp and the US History do for me in terms of exemptions? Ultimately, I want to avoid, as much as possible, taking huge introductory seminars if I attend Berkeley. Are these classes largely unavoidable?

The only math requirement in the College of Letters and Science is the [quantitative reasoning](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/qr.html) requirement, which a 5 on AP Calculus AB easily fulfills. If you plan to take additional math courses, or courses that have math prerequisites, then [a 5 on AP Calculus AB is equivalent to Math 1A, while a 5 on AP Calculus BC is equivalent to Math 1A and 1B](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_AP.html). If you plan to major in political science or some other social studies major, you may want to take Statistics 20 or 21.

A 5 on AP English Language satisfies the first half of the [Letters and Science Reading and Composition](Reading & Composition | L&S Advising) requirement (a 5 on AP English Literature fulfills both halves of this requirement).

A 5 on AP US History fulfills the [American History and Institutions](http://registrar.berkeley.edu/?PageID=ahi.html) requirement, although that can be satisfied by high school course work without AP. It otherwise gives no subject credit; [the History department does not accept AP for subject credit](http://history.berkeley.edu/undergraduate/requirements/).

Note that the AP credit cannot be used to satisfy the [Letters and Science 7 course breadth requirement](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/7breadth.html).
