AP Credit

The FAQ on the Caltech website is not very specific on how AP credit may possibly be given.

My question is, how does Caltech give out AP credit, and what does a "faculty consultation" mean? Could someone explain the process in more detail? For example, if you want to get AP credit, do you automatically have to take Caltech's placement exams? How difficult are they? Are policies for different courses (Calc, Physics, USH, etc) different from one another? Thanks.

There is no AP credit. I cancelled all my senior year AP tests.

Durran, are you so sure of going to caltech already!!! You still haven't found out about stanford!

As Durran said, Caltech doesn't give any AP credit. See other recent threads for explanations of the placement tests. Remember, though, that the majority of frosh coming in have taken just as many APs as you have, and only a very small portion of those students pass out. AP classes are not on the same level as Caltech courses.

... and, as a corollary, if you want to place out of Math 1a because you think it'll be boring review and you "know calculus already" from the AP course, remember that the course is aimed at people with exactly this level of preparation. So in some sense you've already placed out of Calc I and II by being admitted to Caltech, and you are learning what would be the next level course for theoretically-minded people.
