AP credit

Hey guys!

I'm currently in 5 AP courses and I'm going to take 4 AP tests over the next two weeks. If I don't get a 4 or a 5 on the tests, is it possible for me to place out of introductory courses? Thanks!

I never really understood the point to Exempting out of college classes...I mean I'll take the easy A......
Is there a true advantage to exempting out of classes?
But as far as the College here's the policies....

<a href="http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/undergrad/policies/2005/ap_exams.php%5B/url%5D">http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/undergrad/policies/2005/ap_exams.php</a></p>

I'm going to the E-School, so I have no clue what I can get out of with scores...

The point is that it may not be an easy A (i.e. you get a 5 on the BC calc exam, you may end up not getting the A in the course given you're bored and don't keep up with your work). Plus taking something of higher level is more intellectually stimulating. Also, you may want to graduate in less than 8 semesters, or allow yourself room for a second major or the like.

The College ap credit page is accurate for SEAS with these exceptions:
Chem 4/5 gets CHEM 151,152 credit instead of 141,142
Eng Lang 5 gets credit for STS 101 rather than ENWR 110
Physics B credit is practically useless (can't use it to meet degree requirements, and you can't use it as a free elective)
Phy C Mech 4 or 5 gets PHYS 142E credit rather than PHYS 151
Phy C E&M 4 or 5 gets credit for PHYS 241E vs PHYS 232
No credit for Stat
Calc gets credit in form of APMA courses rather than MATH ones.

okrogius, do you have a link to the actual UVA site for SEAS AP credits? Thanks.

What I mentioned was from the Undergraduate Record (course catalog for undergrads). There is a very small section on AP credit at <a href="http://www.seas.virginia.edu/advising/undergradhandbook.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.seas.virginia.edu/advising/undergradhandbook.php</a> though.

okrogius, thanks for the link!

I just went through the website, but it wasn't exactly completely clear to me, so I wanted to just make sure, for SEAS, we need a 5 on CALC BC for credit right? What if we do not get credit for the BC durin the exam but get awarded with AB credit?

Another question: Assuming our AP/IB/'A' Levels scores do qualify us for some sort of credit, do we still have to take placements tests during orientation for the relavent courses? I think it's mentioned on the SEAS site that math placement tests are compulsory - once during orientation, and another 2 weeks into the course.

You're looking at APMA 111 most likely (keep in mind there is also a lower level 109).

Placements test are not mandatory I believe, but you can take them if you're not sure for instance whether to use your AP credit (i.e. got a 5 but a little shaky on the material, so want to check that you really have it down to a level good enough to take the next course). Also if you take APMA 111, two weeks into the course they do a test based on which they may recommend you to switch to APMA 109.
