AP Credits Question?

Some AP's are said to give "Waivers" for certain courses, but not credits. What does a Waiver mean? Does that mean if you are required to take that course you no longer are? Like if I get a Waiver to MATH104 I would no longer need to take MATH104?

Also, some AP's are listed as giving "No Credit." Does that mean literally no benefit to taking the test at all, or will Penn negotiate? Has Penn known to give exemptions or class priorities or some such for APs they don't give credit for?

A waiver means that you pass into the the next level of a course. So for MATH104, you can go directly into MATH114. You receive no academic course credit for a waiver.

No credit means exactly that, you do not get any credit (like the AP CALC AB exam). Done deal.

At the same time, though, you sometimes get retroactive credit (at least for math).

So, if you got a 5 on the AP Calc BC exam, you can take Math 114, get a C or better, and receive credit of 104. Alternatively, you can usually take departmental exams to receive credit for intro level courses.

I would check department homepages for specifics on various waivers/credits for AP exams

So to follow up with Math 104, if you take the BC exam, get a 5, place out, and then don’t take 114, have you not fulfilled the Wharton requirement? Or can you use the 5 to fulfill the requirement even if you don’t get the retroactive credit from 114?

I’m no expert in Wharton, but here’s what their handbook says:

“Students should register for the math course they think they will take based on their
experience in the subject.Necessary adjustments can be made during the course
selection period.Students can also take the internal placement exams administered
by the Math Department during the first week of the fall and spring semesters to
determine their math placement. Please refer to [Penn Math](http://www.math.upenn.edu) for
details about these internal exams and when they are offered.
Students who have credit for MATH 104 may register for the first semester of
statistics (STAT 101 or 430) or continue with calculus (MATH 114).Please note that
STAT 430 requires MATH 114 as a prerequisite.”

You get no credit for getting a 5 on the AP. You either have to take the placement exam offered by the Math dept. or take Math 114 to get retroactive credit.

^ I don’t think that’s true. I’m pretty sure a 5 on Calc BC can be used in lieu of the placement exams and that a student with a BC 5 can also proceed directly to Stats or Math 114. I can’t find the exact link right now, but I know I read that somewhere on the Wharton website.

Hm you may be right…I totally forget…

Now that I think about it, you do get credit for Math 104 with just a 5…honestly, these rules are so confusing but here’s what I found: [AP Math](http://www.college.upenn.edu/freshmen/apmath.php).

Sorry for the confusion. So for Math 104, AP Calc with a 5 = CREDIT! For others, check department homepages.
