AP credits use or not use?

My son will be a freshman next month in Rose. He got some AP credits for calc.(BC) and chemistry. He would rather to retaking them instead of using the AP credits. He heard the courses at Rose is hard so he thinks that re-taking them will give him some breathing time while adjusting to a new environment. I would like to get some advise from the current Rose student on this.

I have one that just graduated and one that just starting. I believe my oldest went into Calc 2, and took honors Chem (I think he had a 4 on his AP?). He could have skipped 1st physics but my husband felt that was critical, so he didn’t use the AP. I think if he isn’t ChemE he may be able to skip Chem. He also tested out of 4 quarters of Spanish but started w/the 4th so he wasn’t lost, but I think he said he could have gone into the 5th qtr. It is so $$ I wouldn’t take anything unless you need to. I am tempted to have mine take humanities at a CCollege. I think he should be ok if he applies himself, doesn’t go crazy & did a hole freshman year. Gotta bank those As, freshman year. If he’s bored w/1st quarter calc he may get out of study mode. I can check with my son if you want more info. I know move in is tomorrow & time is of the essence and you’ve probably already decided!!
