Did any of you guys use an AP English Lit Review book? For the most part I feel that it would be most useful only for a practice exam at the end but if there's any book that actually helps more, that would be great. I'm a little nervous because I've heard that people who got 5's on their Lang exam managed to get 1's on their Lit exam. Of course, that's always possible but it seems so extreme. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, AP Lit is harder than AP Lang, but a book wouldn’t be necessary if you take the class. The exam consists of questions that require you to analyze the passage/poem and notice literary devices like allusions, theme, tone, etc and how those literary devices help convey the author’s viewpoint. All of this you will learn in class.

I used Princeton Review’s review book for Lit and got a 5, so I’d recommend it. (Hell, considering the ineffectiveness of my class, I’d say I self-studied out of PR’s book.) It’s got a thorough MCQ review section as well as a really, really good Free Response review section. The FR review was fantastic, I think. They’ve also got two full-length practice tests.

If you have a long, long time to study, then the For Dummies book is also good - but I would use it in supplement with PR’s book. The For Dummies version is waaaaaaay too long-winded though, in my opinion, to be a good AP review book. I think it’s best to use almost as a supplemental textbook throughout the course since it goes pretty in-depth into how to analyze and write and all that good stuff.

tl;dr Princeton Review is thorough, fast studying with test-taking strategies, lots of sample questions and practice passages, and a fantastic Free Response review section. Use it and see if you have any big weakness, and then use For Dummies - a really in-depth and comprehensive study book - for lots of help on how to strengthen those weaknesses.
