As an IB student (senior), I have the option of taking either the AP English Language exam or the AP English Literature exam in addition to the IB exam. I'm pretty good in English (800 V SAT1, 740 SATII Wr), but I'm not sure which AP exam to take. Does one get more college credit than the other? Is one easier than the other? What is the difference between the two?

When deciding on which AP exam to take, ask yourself one question--do I like essay writing and prose or do I like poetry? If you like poetry better, then you should take the lit exam. However, if you like essay/prose better, then you should take the language. Personally, I favor the language because the lit test contains 400-500 year old poems that serve as an excruciating reading experience.

Depends on where you decide to go to school. For example, if you decide on UNC, you would want to take the AP English Literature test -- it's the only one that can possibly give you any AP credit. Your placement into English 12 (and obtaining 3 credits for English 11) is based on your SAT verbal score, which needs to be at least 660, and it wouldn't make a bit of difference what you score on the Language AP test (which most kids take during their junior year). But, you'll need to score a 5 on that AP Literature test to get any credit.

I'd look at the schools you are thinking about to determine which test is going to be better for you.

Thanks! I guess I'll have to see which gets more credit at my schools. :)

One question still stands though: how are the tests different (format)? Are they basically the same?

The tests differ in the type of literature that they contain.

the lit test contains mostly poetry and fiction.

the language test contains mostly essays and non-fictional prose.
