I took AP English Lang & Comp this past year. For the summer homework, we had to read a novel, selected outstanding passages based on predetermined criteria, and also keep up on a current event all throughout summer (ex. one event that continues throughout June, July, and August).

The course: 5 or 6 out of 10. Each semester had 2 major papers, that if you scored well on, an A for the sake of this example, you’d be set. I even switched between our 2 AP Lang teachers and got 95s in both courses, with both instructors. In fact, my Freshman year english course was more rigorous than this (or, I’ve gotten better at writing). And in case you are wondering, I did get a 5 on the AP test. It was the 5 I was most confident about…both teachers had said I’d get a 5 no sweat. Ta-da? :)

While you don’t really need to study for AP Lang, it’s a good idea to be familiar with the formats of the essays before heading in. We used an obscure practice book with multiple choice about 10x harder than the actual test.

This makes my summer homework look like a joke. All we have to do is choose one book to read out of five and choose eight quotes from the novel that you comment on and analyze. I’m taking the class next year so I dunno how hard it is.

We had no summer homework at all! Had the best teacher :p

THIS CLASS IS SUCH A GOOD CLASS. I guess it depends on your teacher but lang was great for me i learned so much in a not-boring, engaging & challenging way.

During the school year we read huck finn, the scarlet letter, great gatsby, and other typical english books like that

Well our class was an AP/IB hybrid class (with a focus on IB). For summer, we read 2 books. Only toward the end of the year did we focus on AP, but it was pretty much read books throughout the year and write about 2-4 page essays on random details of our choosing (needed a macrocosm ->microcosm -> symbol/motif). At the end we ended up doing AP essays quite frequently and some MCs here and there.

Difficulty: 5/10
AP Exam: 4 (like I said, tho, it was more IB based)

3/10. Summer work wasn’t too bad. 2 books and an essay. Oh and also a 20+ notebook with quotes and analysis for each book. The class was tough. An essay every one to three weeks w/ tough grading (Average essay grades ranged from 77-84) and a participation grade (we were required to participate each class for a good grade). A lot of work and in the end it wasn’t worth it. People with the lowest grades in the class got 5s. Teacher was waay too intense.

So far, a 3.5-4/10, im taking it next school year…All we’ve had to do is type up an introduction, do something called the SOAPS technique, Answer some questions from some 1991 AP LAng response thing, and then write an essay response to The autobiography of benjamin franklin. I still have to make note cards and write an essay on 3 cups of tea, but those shouldn’t be too bad.

We just had to write one essay about rhetorical strategies on a book we read. It did not specify how long it should have been. It was pretty easy.

Christ, my summer projects are ridiculously easy compared to yours. For AP English Lang all I have to do is read In Cold Blood, which took about a week in June.

Taking AP Lang and Comp as a junior this year. Our summer project consists of 4 different parts. Read “The Fountainhead”. Learn about multiple intelligence and Bloom’s Taxonomy. Take a test which analyzes and interprets what kind of ‘learner’ I am. Then write short reflective essay about what kind of learner I am. Then decide on semiotic system utilized in “Fountainhead”. Then, proceed to design a lesson plan which incorporates “The Fountainhead”, semiotics, multiple intelligence and Bloom’s Taxonomy. Multiple criteria of course included in designing lesson plan. Finally, compose short essay justifying my lesson plan. I feel like pulling a ‘Roarke’ and saying to heck with this class!

Lang was a joke in the sense that you can’t actually learn it. If you’re a good writer you could take the test today and get a 5 and if you’re a bad writer there isn’t much a formal class can do for you.

There really isn’t much that one has not already accumulated over the years of English study. You have to be pretty good at reading comprehension and writing. I recommend that you study many of the literary devices/terms that show up on the exam. Our teacher was kind enough to give us a document with all the most frequently occurring terms. I’d rate the class as 6/10…but to the credit of the teachers, there isn’t that much that they can instruct in a course like this…

2/10
It ALL depends on your school and teacher. For summer reading, we read two books and wrote one five-paragraph essay about one of the books. During the semester, we probably wrote about four papers, and only one of them reached about three pages in length. It was a joke. I got a 5 though.

10/10
AP Lang is notorious for being one of the hardest classes in my school. Pretty much everyone in my class got 5s though (maybe a 4 or two). Our summer work was easy. All we had to do was read two ~200 page books, both of which weren’t too hard.
