I am a freshman at a large public HS (~2500) that routinely sends the top 10% of its class to selective state universities, as well as Ivies and other colleges of high prestige. However, AP courses are not an option for 9-10th graders (except for Computer Sci, which I am not interested in, and Euro, which got canceled). I am enrolled in all honors classes, with the most rigorous curriculum possible, which isnt all that rigorous. Because of this I am planning on self studying Enviro during soph year- esp since it is considered one of he easier APs.

Any tips, suggestions, or specific methods about self studying this course?
Which book(s) do you recommend?
How hard is the AP Enviro test?
Experiences?

Thanks in advance, any feedback would be appreciated :)

First off: you DON’T need to take AP classes as a frosh or soph to get into a selective university. Trust me, I got into Stanford, and I had only taken 3 APs by my junior year, all in my junior year.
Just get straight a’s and a 2000+ sat and you’ll be solid…

If you insist on taking the apes (AP envrionmental science) test, I suggest barons AP guide definitely. The Princeton review one is pretty baby when it comes to apes… Kaplan is alright but barons is definately the most thorough.
Another important aspect is not just memorizing the info (and there is ALOT) but learning critical thinking. I suggest watching one of those old (but important) environmental issue videos they watch in classes. Watch national geographic and discovery channel. Just KNOW about the evironmental problems in the world and have an open mind on ways to solve them. This is crucial on the AP test.
Begin studying for it (since you are self study) at least 4 months in advanced. No last min cramming, just 30-60 minutes each day to devote to apes.
Do this and you’ll do great!
Best of luck on your self study and all your college endeavors.

Thanks and oh geez, congrats on Stanford!

I will definitely check Barron’s out, and I am planning to self study with a friend starting around August. Unfortunately I don’t have straight As, I had a tiny hiccup the first trimester of this year oh well!

PR is the best for APES…and you can effectively study it in one month if not even 2-3 weeks for it through intense cramming, contrary to what Mr. Stanford above there said. Also, you should have 2300+ for Stanford (or 2200+ with at least 1500 M+CR), not 2000+.

I’ll check that one out also! How hard is the exam?

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being extremely easy and 10 being extremely difficult, I would rate it a 4. For purpose of comparison, I would rate AP US Government and AP Comparative Governemnt and Politics both a 5 and AP Psychology a 3.

Thanks, I’m glad it isn’t too difficult
