AP Environ Science not college-prep?!

My senior grades for the first term just got entered into my transcript, and AP Environmental Science is listed as NOT college-prep, therefore it doesn't qualify as an a-g course and colleges pretty much won't count it. Also, there's no extra honors credit (a=5 b=4 etc) given, so how is the course even characterized as AP?

However, I went on the UC doorways website where you can look up your school and see what courses are UC/CSU-approved, and AP Environmental Science is listed as an approved Lab Science course that is also approved for extra honors credit.

...so I'm confused. On my transcript it's not listed as college prep and no extra honors credit is given (I got an A, but wasn't given 5 points for it towards my GPA), however on my school's official course list on the UC website, it says otherwise. I'm planning to talk to my counselor about this, but I just wanted to know if others experienced this or know of a solution.

I have heard that some schools and some colleges don’t consider AP EnvSci a “lab science” but it does count as a year of science. This may be the conflict you are running into. However, not receiving an honors credit for it makes no sense and I don’t know any other high school that does not give weighted credit for the AP class. Your guidance counselor should be able to explain this. In addition, if your school DOES not budge on this, I would go back (with your parents’ help) and investigate what communication was given to students prior to your taking the class. It would not be acceptable for you to take an AP class with assumptions that it counts as a science class and an AP class (e.g., weighted) and then find out to the contrary after the fact.

UC considers AP Enviro a lab science that satisfies the d requirement as a subset of Bio, so all Calif schools should list it as such on transcripts. It also qualifies for honors according to doorways. Sounds like your school needs to straighten it out.

@ momof2back2back and BrownParent, I just talked to my counselor today and she told me that the school is currently getting that course approved (it’s a new course this year, so I guess they had to go through a process of getting it approved) and will make the changes accordingly to my transcript in 2-3 days! Thank goodness, I got scared there for a second.
