My small high school does not offer any AP classes, but I was thinking of taking a couple online senior year so I could put them on my transcript. I originally planned to take AP Chemistry, but I realized that since I’m already taking my school’s version of accelerated chemistry, it might look a little odd if I have chemistry and then AP chemistry on my transcript. Thus, I was considering taking AP Environmental Science since that’s what I’m interested in studying in college (maybe/probably), but a lot of people say that AP Environmental Science is a joke class or that admissions people don’t really pay attention to it since it’s considered an “easier” AP. Does anybody have any suggestions on which class to take? I also have the same problem with Latin (I’m taking Latin at school, but I also wanted to take AP Latin online.)
I hope they dont consider it a joke class i already picked it for next year…
AP environmental btw
@batman24 Personally, I don’t consider AP Environmental Science a joke at all, but a lot of people say it’s one of the easiest AP classes and thus is not as important or highly regarded as other harder ones like Calculus or Physics. Thanks for you answer
It’s not as rigorous as other science classes, but that means in no way means it is a joke class. At my school it was one of the most meaningful classes I took because it got me interested in Environmental Science and we got to do an independent study where I was able design my own study using my background from statistics! It was also a nice break to study something I was actually interested in rather than taking a class because I had to. Several students I have known taking APES have also concurrently gone to top-notch schools, like Cornell and William & Mary, so I don’t think it will negatively impact you.
That said, I don’t know how much value you will be able to get from it as simply an online course. If you are interested in getting credit for it, I recommend taking the AP test of the course you are interested in getting credit for. Chemistry is more widely accepted for credit than APES, so that may play into your consideration.
@ Thanks for your answer! It’s nice to know there are people who view it as a meaningful and important class However, I think it’s interesting how you brought up whether one can get credit with Environmental Science or not. Do you know of any schools that specifically accept (or do not accept) credit from taking the exam?
I think that will depend on the school that you are looking at. For instance my school only accepts AP Environmental Science credit if you receive a five on the exam. Other schools don’t accept the credit at all because they want you to take their Introduction to Environmental Science class. I’d look at the AP acceptance policies of the schools you are thinking of applying to
AP Chemistry!
Cool labs :3
AP chemistry… its incredibly easy. I got a 5 on the new format of the test. Very easy calculations. I never did any studying outside of class.
