AP Exam Crisis

I'm currently a Junior and I've been taking the AP Language and Composition course from an online high school for a while now. I'm doing really good in the class, but I've come across somewhat of a hitch just about a week ago.

Apparently there are no organizations or entities that allow 'outside students' like myself to take the AP Language Exam. My actual physical school doesn't offer the AP Exam so thats also out of the list.

I'm stuck with 2 options.. I could either take the AP Literature exam instead, or I could just not take the exam at all(possibly take it next year?).

Now my question is, when I apply to college next year, assuming that I take the AP Lit exam, would they think it weird that I took Lit instead of Lang? If I were to take the exam next year instead, would any complications arise? What if I didn't take the exam at all?

You did not take the class preparing you for lit. Do not take it. It’s not the same.

It may be too late, but in our area you can go to another high school that offers that exam and sit for the exam. Usually you have to arrange it ahead of time. I am not sure if there is still time to register, but you should see if that is a possibility.

I agree with bodangles, you did not prepare for Lit…it’s a totally different exam and that would not be a good idea.

There is no problem not taking the exam.

Yeah I contacted high schools around my area, and it seems like most of them either don’t have the Language class, or they do, but they don’t allow students from other schools to take the exam at their school :/

Lots of people take the class, and then don’t take the exam. Don’t worry about this. No one will wonder what happened.

You should investigate the various English exams available through CLEP. I believe one has a decent overlap with the English Lit exam. If so, that could be an option for you if you are hoping to be able to use this for college credit.

You also could contact the AP organization, and get a new list of not-to-far-away schools that offer the exam you need, and find out if any of them will let you take it.

You should definitely contact AP and find schools within driving distance where you can take it.

You may be too late, but from the AP website:

Ahem… you’re not “doing really good in the class,” you’re doing really well. Hopefully you’ll find a convenient enough way to take the AP test.
