I live in Ukraine and I will be a green card holder soon. Probably I will move to US next year. I hope my English is ok enough to understand me because it's obviously not my native language.

I have finished high school in Ukraine and I want to apply to US universities. Of course, I want to show that I'm competitive student and I can achieve more.

My GPA is 11 out of 12 (in Ukrainian education system).

So the question is: may I take AP exams in US if i have already finished high school? It's really important for me because my level of education is high and some of APs like Calculus and Physics are easy for me.

It wouldn’t really make sense to take APs if you’ve already graduated. At this point, you’re obviously ready for college level work so they wouldn’t help. Oh, and your English is pretty good, far better than some I know who were raised here.

Maybe you are right, but I thought that AP exams will show my education better than my diploma. Also I have heard I may recieve a credit for an AP exam. So tuition would be less. Or maybe i’m not right? Anyway, thaks for your advice.

Technically you could take them, but there’d still be no point. If you want your tuition to be less, you should attend Community College and transfer to a 4 year.

I think you should take them, contrary to what other people here are saying. It is absolutely correct to assume that AP tests will show your education better than your diploma - virtually 99% of college adcoms won’t know what to do with your Ukrainian GPA, because it’s not directly comparable to an American GPA. Therefore, the best way to make your education comparable in their eyes would be to take standardized American tests, like the AP. By scoring well on the AP tests, you show that your education was well rounded and that you are at the same level (or better) than other American students.

I’m agreement with thesmiter. Taking AP tests, AND doing well on them [i.e. 4’s or 5’s] will help Admissions officers confirm the rigor of your HS classes and confirm that you are ready for college level work in the US. They probably wont know of your HS, and that makes it hard to compare you to other applicants. AP tests, in addition to SAT tests, level the playing field and give your application a better chance of consideration.

thesmiter. menloparkmom, yes, that’s the reason why I want to take exams. But the question is still unanswered. So can I take these tests regardless I’ve already competed HS or not?

Also I want to add that my dream school is Northeastern university and I’m afraid I don’t fit the requirements. My SAT I is: 630 CR, 580 WR, 710 M, SAT II Physics - 730, SAT II Math II - 760 and TOEFL 82. I’m going to make them better, I think it will be SAT I 2000+, SAT IIs 800 and TOEFL 95-100. Anyway I hope so. My Ecs are poor… I only play piano. So I hope the APs would help me to convince the admission office.
