AP German scores?

Seems like I'm the only one here who took the German test, haha.
Anyway, I got a 5. Pretty proud of that, considering the last person from my school to take it got a 2 and I think the highest any of my friends have scored on a language test is 4.

Ich glaube, dass es hier andere Deutschsprecher geben muess. :) Wer sind sie?

I’m taking AP German next year. Congrats on your five! I think I’ll be lucky to get a 3 next year; our teacher isn’t the best at actually making us work, and I’m pretty sure we’re all going to slack off next year.

Deutsch ist die Beste! :)

I took it this year too. I was expecting a 4 but somehow pulled off a 5; our German teacher is, uh, not that great and I mostly had to “self study” the language. Anyway, nice to see that there are actually some people who take this exam here.

Yeah haha meine Lehrerin ist auch nicht perfekt, if you know what I mean. I think with any of the languages, the key is to really WANT to know how to speak fluently. The best thing I did all year was read Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen out loud to myself. It’s amazing how much your vocabulary and pronunciation improve (not to mention that you have a way improved sense of how the language works and is used by real Germans). And I watched a lot of German on YouTube and that kind of thing. And, you know, it was probably also helpful that I went to Germany the year before haha. You just have to practice it all the time.

What did you think of the difficulty? I’ve only had three years of German (but like I say, I self-studied a TON and I’m going to be a German major) and I thought it was really easy. I liked my essay a lot (and apparently so did the reader) and the 20-second speaking part could have been way worse. But then I didn’t know how to say “smoke” for the story-telling section and that was obviously pretty important given that it was about people who see smoke, so I bumbled my way around it and ended up only getting to four pictures.

Okay, so maybe you can help me with this. Number 17 on the paragraph completion was “Ich muss aber jetzt (BLANK) machen, weil ich totmuede bin.” Do you have any idea? I’ve been obsessing about this question since May and I haven’t met a German-speaker yet who knows the answer. :P

I got a 4! So many people on here get 5s, though. Are all of you native speakers?

I watched a lot of Youtube too, in the form of Disney Renaissance/Pixar movies in German and channels like Die Aussenseiter. I’m kind of embarrassed to say this, but I’ve actually had German for five years (since 6th grade). It wasn’t until this past year, though, that I put in any sort of effort, despite always getting almost perfect grades—doesn’t say much for my teacher.

As far as difficulty, I though the essay topic was decent and was pretty confident with my response. I had the opposite problem with the pictures; I actually got through them with 30 seconds or so to spare on the last one, so I rambled a lot there. It seemed to me that the paragraph completion was harder than in previous years, but otherwise nothing really stood out. By the way, I believe the intended answer to question 17 is “Schluss,” as in “Schluss machen,” but I don’t remember what I put on the test.

OOOOOOOOOOH That makes perfect sense! Ha I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. I still think the question was too vague, though. I think I put something stupid… Hausaufgaben or something to that effect.
Same here with the grades. First semester last year I had 100% with no extra credit. I literally never missed any points, even though my German was not always correct.

Mariya, I’m not a native speaker, but this was also only my second 5, and the first was on English Lang. I just have sort of an affinity for languages.

I got a 5, and a 5 last year too (don’t ask, my school is strange). I am most definitely not a native speaker, and I have only taken German for 3 years, but my family has German heritage, so maybe some long-gone ancestors came through for me?

What really helped is that my family had a german exchange student for much of the year  but I now speak Badisch instead of Hochdeutsch. So I think the College Board must have been giggling as they graded my oral portion, because I say “isch” instead of “ist”.

There aren’t that many people who take German at my school, but we have an amazing teacher, and she is really enthusiastic. The people who shtay in the class until senior year (or junior year in my case) all have the basic grammar down, so we ended up spending a lot of the year on discussions of current events or telling funny stories about my teacher’s husband. Das war aber natuerlich aslles auf Deutsch! :)

PS. Smoke is der Rauch. I always remember because of the signs that say “Bitte rauch nicht!” in Restaurants. The only tricky bit is that to smoke a chees or something is “raeuchen”. I have no idea why.

Yeah I figured that out later. I can’t think why I wasn’t getting it. :stuck_out_tongue: I have the same problem as you haha, I did a home stay on the Swiss border and now my spoken German is all colloquial and nonstandard. It’s funny reading the German my host sister and her friends use on Facebook - “isch,” “nix,” “arbeitesch,” etc. Almost completely unintelligible if all you know is Hochdeutsch lol.

I feel old, cos I took AP Deutsch in the dinosaur ages :D. Overall, I’d say we’re lucky, since we knew what to expect…unlikes those poor froshes now, who get a revamped exam in 2012… :O

Well I got a 4 on the exam. Without the speaking part, I’m positive I would have gotten a 5. Of course I went on my German exchange program 1 month after my AP exam. Now I can speak fairly well. There was just something about speaking into a cassette recorder that made me nervous.

Anyways, I’m ****ed that my exam had to be 1 month before my trip. By the way, if you have never been to Germany, GO!!! It’s such an awesome country, and such a different experience. Also, I’m a rising senior who has officiallly taken 3 levels of German, having skipped German 2. I don’t think that makes any difference whatsoever though.

Ich denke, dass mein Deutch gut genug ist. Ich werde kein Deutsch an der Universitaet studieren. Tschues meine Damen und Herren :)

Ich muss sagen, dass Sie sehr gut sind im AP German.^^

Can you tell me how the AP German was? Or could you compare it with SAT II German?
I am taking AP German next month, I have lived in Germany for 10 years since I got there when I was three, but then, I came back to my home nation and live here for 4 years, believing that I forgot 50% of my German… Do you think I have a chance to get 5 in AP German? If not, what should i do?

Hi,

I think you might find that the answer to your question is: Ich muss aber jetzt mal PAUSE machen, weil ich totmüde bin!
