AP Gov&Politics VS. AP Art History

Which one is looked at more highly from a college standpoint: AP Government & Politics or AP Art History? I'm trying to chose my course load for senior year...

AP Government is definitely a more rigorous/academic course, but really it is about how things fit into your application. If you're more interested in art or history, AP Art History might be a good fit. But if you like Gov or Politics, definitely take AP Gov.

I don't think either is looked at more highly. Take whichever one you're interested in more.

I agree with kb09026

What if you take Gov/Politics because you think it looks better for college but you don't like it and do badly in the class? Take whichever you will be successful in.

Agree with the posters that say to just pick whatever you want. They're both good courses.

Perhaps in your HS, but its not true generally. Take Gov if you don't have four years of history/social studies. Art History is an excellent elective, but it is not a core academic History class.

It depends on so many factors. What does your high school curriculum look like? What are your interests? Do the colleges that you're considering accept AP credits for the classes? Etc.

I really dislike the notion that AP Government is more rigorous than AP Art History. I took both and AP Art History has far much more material to learn and was more challenging, but it was a much more enjoyable class for me than AP Government was.

btw: in California, 'civics' is a state graduation requirement, so many kids take Gov. The UCs require a visual and performing arts course for admissions so some applicants fulfill that requirement with Art History. Art History is typically taught over a full year but Gov is only one semester in our local schools. fwiw: both of my kids would definitely say that Art History was the more rigorous course, but its probably just our HS. Since Gov is a senior year class, slack-time sets in. :D

Yea, I should have been clearer that the standard disclaimers apply: difficulty highly differs from school to school. Here, AP Gov is basically taught as a Common Law course and is very rigorous and difficult. But other schools definitely differ.

It is probably worth it to ask some other students and current seniors to see which has been the most interesting and difficult at your particular school.

BTW: AP Gov is a Junior year course here.
