My d is going into high school. Our county for the first time gives 9th graders permission to take AP U.S. Government and Politics. She really wants to take it. Has anyone here taken AP in 9th grade? How did it work? I'm concerned about her ability to deal with the reading and writing in that course. She is in general pretty strong academically. She took SAT in 7th grade and did pretty well for a 7th grade.

APUSH is just a lot of busy work. If she actually does the busy work, she will be fine. If she is not up for the busy work, its better not taking it.

She will be fine. My daughter took AP environmental science, and honors bio, honors geometry, honors english , honors spanish and 2 electives…she did great and actually passed the ap exam at the end of the year. She is not a brain surgeon, lots of kids at her high school took 2 ap classes and did fine.

With all of these questions the answer is simple, if she can then she can if she can’t then she can’t, the only way to tell is to throw her into the deep end and see if she sinks or swims…

yeah, you just have to take intensive notes, write essays,a nd read the textbook. an dplus an AP exam in the spring. but it really depends on how it balances out with her other courses.

which reminds, for the first time to, my school will offer AP NSL (national, state, and local gov’t, which is basically U.S. Gov’t and Politics) to freshmen next yr (instead of APUSH, which is suppose to be overloaded w/ work), thinking it would be a good introductory course to prepare freshmen for more vigorous AP social studies courses. but next yr, im a sophomore. although i was recommended for AP gov’t, im going to do honors since its easier and i need that time to study for SAT’s and the AMC’s.

If she is a strong reader, she will be able to handle it. I would suggest that she read a few sections in the text book, and look at the test questions in a test prep book corresponding those sections, see how she feels about it. If she feels confident in handling the material, go for it.

I know of kids taking all kinds of ap courses, including cal ab/bc, in 9th grade. Nothing to be nervous about if they feel ready.
