AP Lit kids

just curious. how many books have you read thus far (excluding summer reading). so far weve read

a gathering of old men

a dolls house

heart of darkness

during the school year, which started sep 1

summer reading was

 1. fountainhead
 2. cry the beloved country
 3. tess of the durbervilles
 4. 100 years of solitude

how much have your classes been reading?

also, ne1 want to start some sort of AP Lit editing group to edit each others essays?

For summer reading I had to read Ethan Frome, Things Fall Apart, The Secret Life of Bees, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Lord of the Flies. I'm all up for having an editing group, for I have an essay that needs editing right now (see my most if you're interested).

I took AP Lit last year, but I kind of feel a need to say that while one does need a broad base in order to be sure that a book they've read will work for the test, I certainly wouldn't consider how many books you read to be the best indicator of how your class is doing...having read so many this early in the year leads me to wonder how well you covered any of them, and if so, how well you'll remember them in may.

But maybe that isn't what you were getting at in the question, so sorry if that came off as harsh.

Summer Reading
Kite Runner, Handmaid's Tale, To the Lighthouse, Song of Solomon
In school
Return of the Native, Turn of the Screw, Heart of Darkness

Currently reading Things Fall Apart. School started September 5th. And we've had plenty of time to cover and review books. How long do you think it takes to review a book? 3 books so far gives over a week to cover each, which is more than enough.

Things Fall Apart ****ed me the hell off when I first started. (Pardon my French.) But after I got through the atrocity that was Okonkwo, I appreciated it. Chinua Achebe did a stupendous job of presenting Ibo culture.

Summer: Love in the Time of Cholera, Tale of Two Cities

School: Hamlet, The Stranger, Heart of Darkness (currently reading)

pinnipotto has a point. Especially with books like Heart of Darkness that are way too full to do justice to in a week and a half, it's probably better to read fewer titles and really digest them. Not only is it less stressful during the year, but in the AP exam you'll probably be able to pull just about anything from the few books you know really well.

A week and a half isn't enough for ONE book? I think I'd go insane talking about just one book for two whole weeks, especially one like Heart of Darkness that's less than 100 pages.

Summer Reading: Anna Karenina
School: Hamlet, Beowulf, Henry IV Part 1 (currently reading)

He definitely did. But why did the book p#@s you off?

The book didn't tick me off, sighs. Okonkwo did. He was such an idiot.

I realize it might also be worth mentioning that my AP Lit class was also the first year of IB HL English, so that could have contributed to the way we studied books. Perhaps typical AP classes do cover more.

But I did make a 5 (and an 800 on SAT2 Lit), so there must be something to it. :)

umm we just finished Iliad, Agamemnon, The Orestia, * and now we're reading *Antigone

Summer reading: Richard III, Age of Innocence, Brave New World, and Shewing the Two Contrary States of Man (poems by W. Blake)

In school: Spent a week on each part of a story (characterization, plot, symbolism, POV, etc) by reading like 5 short stories on each. We are now reading selected Canterbury Tales.

summer: hahaha (crappy public school)
so far we've done Beowulf, Seafarer, started on Chaucer - will prolly spend a lot of time here

we usually spend 1 month or 2 on each book/topic

Summer: Anil's Ghost + 3 others of our choice (from a long list)

In school: A Room with a View, A Streetcar Named Desire, Sons and Lovers (reading now)

I think some books (like Forster's) deserve more time and discussion than others (like Streetcar...I loved it, don't get me wrong, but it's short and fairly straightforward, compared to the others).
