Hi,
I've been in orchestra (viola) since 5th grade, but have been considering taking AP Music Theory instead next year (my senior year). I enjoy orchestra, and really enjoy music, but have no real awards or achievements going for me besides being first chair. Would colleges look down upon quitting orchestra after so many years and switching to AP Music Theory?
Thanks!!

No, it will have no impact IMO.

I really wouldn’t recommend quitting orchestra for AP Music Theory. What would be best is if you could take both- AP Music Theory complements ensembles nicely.

Guineagirl96-I wish I could, but they’re during the same period only. So it’s one or the other.

I would recommend staying in orchestra (commitment) and self-studying for AP Music Theory if you really want to take AP Music Theory. I did that myself (had a few classes with my piano teacher and some fellow students, which helped greatly), but with a music background, I think it’s definitely doable.

Also, back to “awards and achievements,” I don’t really think AP Music Theory would be considered more than being first chair. I think you’d have a much better chance at getting “awards and achievements” in orchestra (maybe try all-regionals/states/etc. orchestra?) + it would be more fun (fun is the key word) + commitment plus. The AP is in May anyways, after college decisions, so I don’t think it would really help towards college.

I wouldn’t give up being first chair of orchestra for your senior year especially if that is your major award/achievement.
