My school used to offer AP Music Theory. It got cut when we began using the trimester system (it is now a one-trimester/13-week class.) However, students are still eligible to take the AP exam, but it's basically a self-study, because you can't cover that much material in such a short time, according to my teacher.
I would really like to take the exam next year, but I'm not sure how to go about working on my own towards a class like that. Has anybody here taken the exam before/self-studied it? Was it worth it?
Thanks :)

I took AP Music Theory this year and I just found out that I got a 5. Just buy Barron’s and read it all the way through. It’s a godsend.

@CantConcentrate: That’s great! Sorry, sort-of changing the topic here, but I am self-studying AP Music Theory and was wondering if Barron’s was a good choice. I think I’ll give it a chance!

OP, maybe we should create a thread for AP Music Theory 2012??

@CertainAbsurdity: Thanks! Our teacher was teaching it for the first year and we practically used Barron’s as our textbook ALL year (our school budget was lacking). Having some prior music experience really helps too, especially with the aural section.

@CantConcentrate: Haha awesome! I do have quite a bit of music experience; that’s what led me to decide to self-study. I’m glad to hear that Barron’s helped you get a 5––I’d like one of those, too! Congrats!

@CertainAbsurdity: Haha thanks! Good luck in your self-studying endeavors!
