hi im a junior and i have a pretty good grasp of piano/music theory (certificate of merit advanced level) that ive accumulated over the years...just a question, would it be a good idea to take the AP exam next may?

im also taking calc bc, us history, physics, and english language (school) and chinese (self-study). i kinda dont want to make it so that im studying more music theory than the other subjects.....since some of those are top priorities

soooo any suggestions? and what would be a good book to review with. thanksss

Music Theory is a fairly intense AP course. I think it'd be difficult to self study, as much of it isn't just straight theory "book work". The part-writing and harmonization and the theory questions are straightforward and formulaic, but thats only about half of the exam.

The sight-singing and dictation (is that what it's called? it's been a while) is really difficult, and takes a lot of aural practice. Unless you have somebody instructing you on it, I don't know how you'd study it.

I haven't seen any good AP Music Theory review books. We used a college music theory text when I took the exam and we did singing and listening practice three times a week.

I'm a panel cm finalist (thats above level advanced btw) over 90% on the theory test and i have seen some of the ap stuff. Compared to the AP, cm music theory is like basic math vs. trig.

that should get you a 90+
and if you have perfect pitch you should be fine for listening
if not, you're screwed for that but it doesn't count for much
