AP Physics B? Or Biology?

Hi!

Even though the course selection has been done already, but our schools has this add-drop period in May, so I can have another chance in deciding Physics or Bio.

Anyway, I chose to take Honors Biology (I havent had any bio courses in my life yet) in my senior year under the impression that colleges wants all three sciences (chem, physics, and bio). For example, Carnegie Mellon CIT's "require" applicants to take one year or above for each science field.

But since I'm gonna apply for engineering (ChemE to be specific) in other colleges as well, would it be better to take AP Physics B instead of Honors Biology? (I can't double up in science btw). Would CMU reject me because I didnt take Bio?

Thanks alot for your help!

Does your school not require some form of Bio to graduate? My school requires Environmental Science, Bio, and a physical science (either physics or chemistry). I was under the impression that the Bio and physical sciences requirement was fairly standard.

But if your school doesn’t require it, I doubt you’ll be rejected from a college because of it. My recommendation is to take the physics class since it aligns better with your interests and is more telling about your personality than is an intro bio class.

Thanks a lot for the reply!

No, my school actually only requires two credits of any science course to graduate :stuck_out_tongue:
(kinda a “meh” high school huh?)

So, for colleges such as CMU, the “required high school courses” are just recommended courses?

id definately would say take bio. it would be easier and will give u a background to life sciences and will help you understand some chemistry.

i took both bio and chem and did wonderfully. it really opened my eyes into sciences. AP bio and chem i got 5’s

If you are going into engineering, then of course AP Physics!

^But it’s ChemE, which means a background in life sciences would be helpful.

Physics B as a second year of high school physics might as well be a remedial class. Many many kids in my school got 5’s on the AP Physics B exam after one year of honors physics. Either go for AP Physics C or Honors Biology IMO.
