AP Psychology?

I am a sophomore currently, but I’ll be a Junior in just a few months and I’m looking to get into an Ivy or a top school like Duke/Stanford/etc. So far, I’ve taken the hardest classes available to me and I intend to keep up with having a rigorous schedule for the rest of my high school career. Next year I’ll be taking:
AP English
AP Calc AB/BC (AB first semester, BC second semester)
APUSH
AP Physics 1 or AP Environmental or AP Bio (haven’t decided yet  )
Honors Latin IV (I might take the AP test though; my school doesn’t offer AP Latin, just Honors Latin for level IV and V and I need to find out which class will prepare me for the AP test)

I’m thinking about possibly taking AP Psychology on top of this but outside of school as an online class. I’m genuinely interested in Psychology (not as a career, but I’m still interested in the subject) and I’d really like to take this class. However, I’m worried that it might be too much on top of the other 4 AP classes I’m taking. I also play sports year round, sometimes even 2 sports at a time, and I love to volunteer and just can’t give that up. Do you think I can manage AP Psychology on top of this? A description of the class said that it only takes about 3-5 hours per week, but I don’t know if that’ll be too much time still. Do you think I should just take it next summer?

If I were you, it would be too much for me. But the thing is, I’m not you. A gut feeling tells me that I wouldn’t be great at it, but I don’t know you as a person, or what specific sports you play, and your strengths and weaknesses. If you think you can handle it, go for it. If not, I wouldn’t try.

Thanks. I think I actually am leaning more towards waiting to take it until the summer because I know how important Junior year is and I think I could spend that time better either by studying for the SAT/ACT or by enjoying some time to relax/be with my friends.

AP Psychology can wait till senior year.
DOn’t you have a 6th period in your school?

Yeah, but it’s required that I take Gym and also AP Psychology is only open to Seniors at my high school. I want to take AP Psych, but I’d rather take a harder science class in its place because it’s known that AP Psych isn’t that hard of a class and I want colleges to see that I’ve challenged myself. Thanks for your input

Wise decision! Remember, you will also be taking tons of tests and you will be reviewing for them on the weekends (PSAT, SAT, ACT, subject tests, AP tests). My D wanted to take AP Psych as well (because she is interested and also as a career!) and her guidance counselors in her school discouraged her from taking it. It is considered “light” and will not count much towards the academic rigor, yet it might distract you from getting the perfect 800s or the straight As!

Good luck!

Thank you so much. That’s really what I have come to think as well

You can take PE over the summer, “online” through Florida VIrtual School. Nope, it doesn’t involve sitting in front of your computer :D, you have to rent a tracking monitor that registers that you exercise every day. How you exercise is entirely up to you.

Thanks! I’ll look in to that. Do you think that a private school would allow me to do that?

Ask your GC ASAP!

I asked; he said no :frowning:

Did you explain it was a real class, etc?

Yeah

:frowning:
Would the GC be willing to consider virtual school for other subjects?

No; they don’t have any affiliation with a virtual school and so they won’t allow me to do that. That’s what the GC told me

MODERATOR’s NOTE:
Let’s dispense with the back and forth. The OP’s school will not accept online credit for PE (and really that is not unique to that school) and nothing said here will change policy. Offer suggestions within the constraints provided.
