AP Question and Major Question

Hello,

I am a Johns Hopkins hopeful with two questions.

1.) This may have been asked before, but I looked and didn't find much. How much does ones choice of major effect ones admission chance? For example, if I were to apply ED with a BME major would my admission to the school stay independent of my admission to the BME program, or are they interconnected? I understand that one gets two separate letters of acceptance. If someone were to apply with a Neuroscience major compared to a slightly less "competitive" (not quite the right word) major would ones chances of admission chance?

2.) With the arrival of AP Test Scores I received 5's with the exception of Government and Economics. I received a 3 on both of them- even though I had an A in the class for both of them. Oddly, the government class at my school is one of the most difficult classes offered, I was one of two A's and on a practice test the day before the exam that my teacher scored I got 78/80. My handwriting is very poor, and I honestly think that may be the culprit. My econ grade has a distraction notice. Would it in anyway be to my advantage to have the CollegeBoard remove these scores? (I have 4 5's a 4 and now 2 3's.)

Thanks a lot!

BME is the only major that is viewed separately. Otherwise, your choice of major (which of course can, and almost expected to change) is to see how you fit in-do your EC’s reflect your intended major? Do you show a passion for that? There aren’t any quotas for history majors or public health majors.

Don’t make excuses for your AP scores. They are what they are. Low AP scores won’t necessarily keep you out, especially with several 5’s, and high scores won’t guarantee you in.

For BME, you’re first considered for admission to the University, and then everyone who’s accepted is considered for the BME program. It’s quite possible to get accepted to the school and not to the BME program, and applying to the BME program is not going to hurt your overall admissions chances… that said, don’t apply BME unless you actually want to study engineering. I’ll spare you my usual BME rant, but keep in mind that BME is an engineering major and not just a “pre-med” route. Like YanksDolphins said, everyone is considered for admission to the University, not to a particular major (except as I noted above), so your choice of major will matter in so much that they’ll want to see if/why you’re interested in a particular field. They’ll look at your EC’s, courses taken, recommendations etc as well as your major essay and compare it to what you want to study. That doesn’t mean you’re completely out of luck if you just decided you want to study history and all your extracurriculars are science related - you just need to explain and show (through recommendations etc) that you’re actually passionate about studying history.

As for the AP scores, I agree with YanksDolphins - they 3’s aren’t great, but as long as you have other good AP scores that show you can handle college level (-ish) type work, don’t worry about them too much. It’s not worth paying College Board to have them removed.

2) Don’t cancel AP scores of a “3”.
