How important are AP scores in the admissions process? Can they enhance your chances?

For schools that do not accept AP scores in lieu of SAT subject test scores (e.g. NYU), AP scores carry little to no weight in admissions. The classes themselves, depending upon the context of your school, could enhance your application. However, applicants from schools with few, if any, AP courses are not penalized.

They can validate your grades. Every situation is unique. In some cases they will help ones case, while in others they have little consequence.

To answer your question, of course they can enhance your chances (assuming high scores). Will they? Like most things, it depends.

do 4’s paired with A’s hurt?

@RunningForLife no, 4s are good scores. They will get you college credit on some exams. You would never be penalized for a 4, since It is a very, very, very good score.

In terms of college applications, self reported AP scores simply validate the rigor of your high school’s AP classes, and validate your grades (so if you got an A, it validates your A). If you got an A in the class but only a 2 on the exam, that is not ideal …

What if you got a C in the class but a 5 on the exam?
