Yes if I was your parent and the school gave you a hard time about dropping an AP class as a sophomore I’d be the parent in the office pounding on the desk. The only APs our school allows sophomores to take is APUSH or in rare cases an AP language. There’s so much going on in HS you don’t need to be this stressed at this age. Believe me dropping that AP math class is not going to make or break your life. Good luck.

I have an idea. Instead of saying you want to just drop that AP class (which I think is completely appropriate), why don’t you also pick a different elective that looks interesting to you - just for fun - because you’re a HS kid! Maybe there’s a business class (our school has sports marketing, intro to stocks and bonds), computer class (powerpoint or a comp language), or something else (film, art, music theory). My son is taking a genetics class as an elective (he’s a soph too) - it’s a second science (he’s in honor chem) and it is honors, but it’s half a year and no lab. Something he’s interested in. Other options he selected as an alternative for the half year were meteorology or forensics. But there’s so much more. Take advantage of what your HS offers, esp now as a soph. Don’t kill yourself over this.

The only AP open to sophs in our HS is AP World.

I understand, and thank you, the rigors of high school are beyond what I expected. I certainly had an easier time in middle school.

I’m considering hon. accounting, but don’t know if that’s tough? it might be full also…

Why take accounting in HS? It will probably be worthless for any professional goals, and is in the nature of vocational training, not education. If you are going to take something vocational, why not make it something really useful that you won’t be repeating in business school, like woodworking

I heard it’s not terribly difficult, but not really sure about it.

Your rigor is strong. Why not try to balance your academic courses with one creative elective? Does your school offer creative writing, studio art, broadcasting, photography, etc.? Consider an elective that will exercise your creativity. It will not only serve as a good distraction to your challenging academic classes, but it will help you to be a more well-rounded thinker.

I tried taking Art 1 last year, lowest grade. It took up some outside school time too. I just have a hard time with the arts/electives.

Do you guys think I should be worried about junior year? It’s the most important year, and I’m stressing in sophomore year.

Apstudent, Don’t waste your time worrying about tomorrow today. Get rid of the AP stat’s class and just do your best with your classes this year. If you are not doing so well, plan next year’s classes accordingly. At our school it would be very difficult to get out of an AP class but then again, you would not have been able to take AP stats as a sophomore. I would definitely get your parents to step in if you are not successful.

thank you, I will try to get out of it asap. Same at our school.

It good to challenge yourself but not so good to stress yourself to the point that you loose your balance in life. Good luck switching classes and yes, do involve your parents if you need to. Sometimes high school offices will push back if they don’t know you well but be firm. You’re off to a great start if you’re taking even one AP as a sophomore. Don’t compare yourself to others, measure your achievements for yourself.

Yeh, I just didn’t think reasonably and crammed another ap in my workload. I took ap human last year, so I guess it’s better off to just take 1 every year until junior year.

My daughter got talked into talking stats as a sophomore and it was not a good experience. I wish she had waited until Sr year.

Was she in trig? In the past several years, only a handful of people have taken it in soph. year. One guy took it last year as a soph., but I guess his schedule might have been different from mine. I guess it’s not just the math component that’s important, but rather the rigors of the class such as reading, writing, and the concepts.

I have to wait until the end of the 9 weeks before they decide…idk what to do now. I’m going to fail ap stats…

Hello Ccers,

I still want to drop ap statistics. Although I got 100 on the first distributions quiz, I reviewed the first 3 chapters over the summer. Did I get lucky or do I really know what I’m doing? I heard that it gets harder after Chapter 1, so what are your guys advice? It’s a standstill right now, and the administration can’t really do much to let me out. The administration thinks I can do it, but what if I end up with a 3 or less on the ap exam? Thanks.

The issue was the teacher was horrible (he was a one-year wonder) and she had no friends in the class. Statistics is not an intuitive subject, so having a good teacher is critical. How did students who had the teacher last year do on the AP exam?

I’m really not sure about the AP exam scores. I know that only 1 sophomore did it last year, and same here, all senior class, so I don’t know anyone.

Congratulations on the good score! I agree with the admin that you probably CAN handle it. They let you in, you aced the first test… you have the ability. Not necessarily that you should, though, if it’s still upsetting you as much as before. I don’t think getting a 3 on the test is that big a deal - you can, I believe, wipe out completely scores you don’t like. And I doubt if a school would ding you anyway for it, and might applaud the challenge you set for yourself.
