My son is a senior. He was signed up for AP Calc but wants to switch to AP Stats. He's good at math, 700 SAT, but doesn't really like it too much. I'm wondering if it will look bad to not have taken Calc his senior year, seems like everyone takes it around our area. Advice? We live in Virginia.

Well, I suppose it depends with what purpose he is taking the class.

I took AP Stats last year and loved it. Yes, I actually loved a math class, which has never happened with me before. I left with a new passion and intrest for the subject that I never expected.

For that reason, I would suggest he take Stats.

On the other hand, he will need Calc eventually. However, I suppose there are a number of factors, especially the teacher. If he has the opportunity to take Calc from an excellent teacher, then he should stick with it. Otherwise, switching the Stats might make him happier, leading to a better education overall.

Don't do AP Stats if your son likes math, cause it will be boring as ****. I agree with SparkShooter: if your school has a great AP Calc teacher, he should stick with it. If the calc teacher at your son's school is not very good, i'd suggest going with AP Stats.

AP Stat is the math class for people who dont like math.

I took ap calc last year and it was the best math class I ever had. It was complex, challenging, and of course, I had an excellent teacher. This year I have just as good of a teacher for AP stats, but, as my calc teacher told me herself last year, it is a big step down from calc.
If your son truly likes math that challenges, he should take calc. I liked it more and more as the year went on.

Take Calc BC or AB b/c colleges prefer kids that have some calc high school background. I'm taking Stats now as a senior after I took Calc BC last year, and there's more math in AP Chem than in AP Stats.
