Hi, I am a high school junior planning on applying to some selective colleges next year. This year AP Calc did not fit in my schedule so I took an honors Calculus course. I am also planning on being a Bio major on a pre med track in college. As a senior, would it look better to admissions officers to take AP Stat or AP Calc AB?
If your intended major requires math more advanced than calculus 1, then having AP credit for calculus AB may allow you to start college in calculus 2 (effectively giving you an extra schedule space for a free elective, possibly later).
Otherwise, as a pre-med student, you will find that many medical schools expect you to take both calculus and statistics in college (many do not accept AP credit for pre-med course requirements), so AP credit in either will not avoid taking a course (though you could take a more advanced course e.g. calculus 2 instead of calculus 1 as described above).
Choose the one with a better teacher. Really.
I would take AP Stats now…you may have to take Calc again in college for pre-med.
I took AP Stats as a sophomore and am currently in AP Calc AB this year as a junior. I personally enjoyed Stats more and depending on where you go, you may have to take Calc again anyways.
I agree^
