I’ll be a sophomore in high school next year, and I can choose to take either Precalculus (with Trigonometry) or AP Statistics. I want to major in something in the social sciences, so I think when it comes to taking an AP math course, Stats would be more useful. I can still choose to take Precalculus junior year after AP Statistics (but not both in the same year) if I want to, since I will be taking more AP’s junior year.
Precalc. You could take stats in college.
Precalc. It’s a core math class while stars is an elective
Must take precalc for sure. But also take AP Stat at the same time if you have the room in your schedule. Since you are taking more APs your junior year, the sophomore year may be the perfect time. That is what two of my kids did.
What is the math path after pre-calc at your school?
Pre-calc, Calc AB, Calc BC?
or would you do
Pre-calc, Calc AB, AP stats?
Precalc, as you’re still a sophomore. Take stats closer to when you start college. I think bopper’s second suggestion above looks great.
Precalc. Don’t interrupt the math sequence and precalc will be expected by most 4-year colleges.
Among the top tracking students at D18’s high school, sophomores take both pre-cal and AP stat simultaneously. And take MVC senior year.
^That’s highly unusual though
I certainly wouldn’t extrapolate to the entire country, but locally, not that unusual at all. Again, for students that track high(er) in math. Since these students typically take MVC as seniors, PreCalc and AP Stat is a popular sophomore combo HERE and not unusual HERE. And HERE is defined as “Silicon Valley.”
My D18 took both and didn’t find it overwhelming with her other courses.
OP is interested in social sciences. There is no need to get to multivariable calc.
