@PhilipL Yes, I’m interested. Plus I would like the credit! Thanks!
@MrAustere Good luck! I hope you find stats as interesting as I did!
Is the 5 steps to a 5 prep book good as well?
As an aspired Statistician…I’m so hyped for this course and the introduction of my desired career. Have been reading so much books based on Statistics and I never get bored of it. Upcoming senior w/ Physics Honors and AP Calculus AB as well.

Hi! Prospective self-study here. What prep books / websites / videos would you guys recommend? I’m self-studying this course after taking BC, but I have come to understand that Calculus and Statistics are two completely different worlds. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations when studying? I would really appreciate that. Thanks!
AP Statistics is not a hard course, given that you excel in Math. By excel in math, if you are in an upper-level math course (AP Calculus) and getting good grades, you will do similar or better in Statistics. The concepts are not obscure; most are simple concepts with new variables, which can get a little confusing. The AP exam this year was a breeze (in my opinion) but you do need some logic and reasoning skills.
See, I can’t imagine self-studying for Stats. But then again, math never really was my forte.
I will agree that this AP exam was shockingly easier than I expected. The multiple choice was a breeze and most of the free response, although I know I messed up on a few questions. I personally thought the 2014 free response was easier than the 2015, but vice versa for the multiple choice. My teacher was outstanding, so I’m really hoping for a 4/5!
I am also self studying!!!
I will most likely end up self-studying this course next year, because our teacher has had a bit of drama and had to resign this year. Anyways, any public posts of resources online or otherwise that would benefit all of the self-studiers are greatly appreciated! I am using UC Davis’ Statwiki which I haven’t been able to navigate properly, and the site of the book I am using (http://bcs.whfreeman.com/tps5e/default.asp#t_923932____ is the URL) which has video tutorials for the 5e of Starnes, Yates, and Moore’s “The Practice of Statistics” which is a very easy read anyways. Hope this helps at all…
Hey there! Going to join this thread
For all you self-studyers (which there seems to be a lot of ), I’d second the textbook @microversal mentioned, “The Practice of Statistics” (go for the newest edition for up-to-date stuff with calculators and whatnot). We’re going to use that at my school as well (plus our summer assignment is coming from there). It seems to be pretty solid/easy to follow. At our school we have “qualifying exams” to see if you can get into AP-level classes, and we had to do the first 2 chapters to prep for that. And for our summer assignment we have to do chapter 4 <-- Just mentioning all of this so if you want, you know where we are for reference. In terms of review books, Barron’s seems to be at the top of that list.
Good luck everyone (and hopefully it really is as straightforward/relatively easy as it has been claimed to be – especially since I’m taking 4 other APs…)!
I’m taking this year after having scored a 5 in AP Calculus BC, so a lot of people have told me that AP Statistics will be a lot easier. Although it is a very different type of math, and in my school, most student end up with a C or lower :/.
Taking the class as a sophomore along with AP World and Precalc. What do you guys think about the 5 steps to a 5 book?
How long does preparation for the AP stats take? If I put in about an hour a week from now until May, will that be enough time? I don’t want to take the class at my school because my schedule is overloaded and it’s probably going to be a waste of time (such as doing unnecessary projects to “learn” a concept)
I will study intensively for two weeks in January with Barrons, PR, REA and 5 Steps to a 5.
What would you say the most difficult topic is in this course?
Probability
I regret signing up for this class. The old AP Stat teacher at my school (she was ridiculously good) left last year. The one we have this year has never taught the class before, only Algebra II/Precalc Honors the past 10 years. At the beginning of the year almost half of the people in each of the 4 periods dropped out because the class average on the first test was a 50%. At the moment we are doing scatterplots, something which should be really easy but the class is struggling with. I’ll be darned if I manage to get even a 4 on the exam this year.
@ish512 At that point i’d just recommend getting a really good textbook…
@zenith99 I recently got the Barron’s book and have been self-studying that along the way…
@ish512 Nice! I hear great reviews for Barron’s books. We’re also doing scatterplots right now, so we’re probably at a similar pace. I’m sure you’ll do great on the exam
