AP Studio Art, 2-D Design

I have never met anyone who has gotten above a 4 on this test. Is it really that difficult?? I am working on finishing my portfolio and want to know if anyone has any advice to share about scoring well on this "exam". Thanks!

bump.....................

My school has produced about 12 kids who got 5s last year.

Do you guys work on it for more than one year?

We work on it for one year. Many of us do dip/trip/quad-tychs to try and squeeze out a few more pieces. We're all very very driven so a lot of us do work over summer/winter on our own accord. Also, I don't know if this helps but, we're quite priviledged and have unlimited art supplies.

am So jealous of all you guys who get to take this class...we don't have it at our school because the art dept sucks. No AP Art History either.

How hard would it be, theoretically, to produce a portfolio for this exam without taking the class next year? I'll be working on college admission portfolios anyway, which require up to 20 pieces. I heard you need around 40 though for the AP?

for 2-D design you only need 24 with 5 quality pieces that may or may not come from your breadth or concentration, i'm not sure what you have to do to get a 5, the highest grade from our school last year was a 4 and that girl was amazing she even got a 6 on her breadth section and they reprinted her art in some of the AP posters. I on the other hand would be ecstatic to get a 3.

do they tell you what you got on each section?

you basically have to be really bad at art NOT to get a 5.

Although I never took the portfolio exams, I did go to an arts high school, and it wasn’t at all uncommon for kids to receive scores worse than 5, despite being accepted to some incredible visual arts and design schools. The grading, from what I can tell, is horrendously subjective…
