I am considering doing an AP rescore. Reading over the Rescore form, it says your score could change in either direction. However, reading through the forums here, it seems that people are only reporting no change or an increase in their score.
Did anyone ask for a rescore and have their score go down?
That’s really not possible, from what I understand. Rescores are for things like the ETS scantron machine not reading your answer sheet properly.
Well, if it didn’t read your answer sheet properly, couldn’t your score go up OR down?
What? No. Scantron machines register false negatives, not false positives. There’s a way higher chance that they’d read a correct answer as incorrect (you made an off-by-one error, you had an eraser smudge, etc.) than they’d read an incorrect answer as correct.
I could be wrong, of course.
The scantrons very rarely mess up. A rescore will most likely not change your score at all, and it will end up just being a waste of money. I suggest you just accept your score and move on.
Thank you!
If you read elsewhere on this site, you’ll find at least a 12-20 instances where someone reported a rescoring led to a higher score. It happened in a wide variety of situations (a 4 went to a 5, a 1 was increased to a 4, etc.)
AP allows rescoring, and has a specific form for it.
I never heard of anyone receiving a lower score, and was wondering if that ever happened.
Have a great weekend.

Anshu, believe it or not, I have heard of such things affecting scores (I don’t understand that, myself)
