Q: What was ironic about Davis's method of government when he was president of the Confederate States of America?

He wanted to unionize all the confederate states, while they were initially fighting for states' rights?

gaspee incident-led by john brown and colonists who burned a british ship that was chasing a merchant ship--contributed to Britain passing the Intolerable Acts

Davis--because of his emphasis on states rights, he had a hard time controlling the Confederate government during the Civil War; a group of ultra states rightists actually proposed seceding from the Confederacy

P.S....isnt it funny how two John Brown's, one during the Revolutionary war period and the other during the pre Civil War period, were known for their radical, violent acts against authority?

Exactly! Good job. (both of you ;))

Jefferson Davis realized that the North had a huge economic advantage, and the only way to have a chance is is the South became organized very quickly, so Davis sets up a big bureaucracy to to oversee economic activities. Unfortunately for Southerner, the South was way too far behind to have a chance at catching up.

what was the gospel of wealth?

Carnegie's statement on his views on class society, acquiring wealth and how should that wealth be used. He basically emphasized hard work and said that the wealth should be contributed to the arts etc.

what was reganomics and how did it affect the nation (economy, soceity etc)

trickeldown..ahh..decreased taxes. debt. (also, military spending with reagan). pure conservative.

What occured in 1968 (name 4 things).

also: reaganomics = supply-side economics and was basically the opposite of keynesian econonics....ahh darn who actually endorsed keynesian economics, though?
for 1968 question: assassination of robert kennedy, assassination of mlk jr, election of nixon, issues at the democratic convention..dont remember teh details

no, that was election of 1928

--

what was significant about the election of 1824?

election of 1824 was where there were 4 candidates and no one got the majority vote so it went to the House of Reps. Clay saw that he wasn't going to win, so he lobbied for Q Adams. In return, when Q Adams got the presidency, Q gives Clay the sec of state position, seen by everyone as the position precursory to the presidency.

This becomes known as "the corrupt bargain."

Jackson = annoyed because he had the plurality of the vote.

the Virginia and Kentucky Resoultions (written by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson) was a direct response to what Act passed by the Democratic Republicans?

What was the operation in Iraq 1992 called?

Operation Desert Storm! woot woot

(I've been randomly checking up on this thread every now and then for the last two days and this has been the only question I knew the answer to)

the Virginia and Kentucky Resoultions (written by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson) was a direct response to what Act?

the alien and sedition acts...i think they were against the democratic republicans...they werent passed by them

** Who was the Great Compromiser? Name his compromises and briefly explain them. **

Great Compromiser: Roger Sherman, who promised that more representation was in favor of states with a larger population, while smaller states recieved less representation.

Q:What was the Hayne-Webster debate? (simple).

I believe the Great Compromiser is Henry Clay...He settled the Missouri Compromise of 1820 (Missouri could be entered as a slave state if Maine is entered as a free state in order to maintain the number of free/slave states + slavery is prohibited above the 36' 30 degrees latitude line). Henry Clay was also the key figure in the Compromise of 1850 (Compromise that dealt with the lands acquired from the Mexican Cession as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848 that came as a result of The Mexican War. In organizing these lands, Clay proposed the following: CA would be a free state, slave/free status of New Mexico and Utah would be discussed at a later time, Fugitive Slave Law would be enforced). Compromise of 1850 essentially kept peace for the time being, only pushing the real issue (ie- evaded the q of slavery in New Mexico and Utah)

Hayden vs Webster- Hayden was basically John C. Calhoun's little guy (He came to maintain Calhoun's views after Calhoun died). i just vaguely remember that there WAS a debate...basically had to do with again w/ states vs fed gov't? Hayden in supporting Calhoun would prob be pushing for states' power + nullification and daniel webster...all i recall of him is that he supported Clay's Compromise. ok so basically, I didn't answer the question!

My Q: Wade-Davis Bill: Who passed it? Who didn't want it passed? What was it? When? How effective?
