This might be retarded but its been annoying the **** out of me: When was slaverly officially/unofficially banned from the Northeast. It seems that slavery was never "officially" banned by a law, but it seems assumed that it was due to the Civil War, pop sovern, and Dred Scott(ruling that all new territories had to allow slavery but excluded the Northeast, which doesn't really make sense since slavery had to be allowed due to the property justification). So please if anyone can specify to me the law that banned slavery or show me that individual states banned slavery, please tell me.
Thx

The "official", official end of slavery is the 13th ammendment of the Constitution, ratified in 1865.

The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 banned it. I think.

The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 forbade slavery north of the Ohio Valley.

the Ordinance also set aside land for schools.Thats kinda weird they would put slavery and schooling in the same "thing". 0_o

No, I think it was the Land Ordinance (1785) that dealt with public education. The Northwest Ordiance (1787) dealt with creating n ew states in the territory, and it also prohibited slavery in that territory.

im sure that the Northwest Ordinance banned slaves, but only in the Midwest (which was later ruled unconstitutional by the Dred Scott case), but the ordinance never banned Northeast from slavery. It was just "assumed" in my book that slavery was prohibited in the North.
