Currently a junior doing dual enrollment at my local college and contemplating whether I should just take AP classes next year or stick to dual enrollment.
Current Schedule
Fall Quarter: Calc I, Progamming 110, English 101
Winter Quarter: Calc II, History 147, PE (Have to take it to graduate)
Spring: Calc III, French, Physics
Next year fall quarter: (Dual Enrollment)
Calc IV, physics, english
Next year (AP)
AP Comp Sci
AP Calc BC (Calc I and Calc II count as AB)
AP Gov
AP French
Nanotech
Cisco Networking
Some pros of dual enrollment are that I can get my associates before I graduate high school
What do you guys think will colleges like better in terms of rigor (The high school option, or dual enrollment)
Mainly going to be applying to out of state colleges so transferring credits may also be an issue
Bump
For math, it looks like you will attain a higher level with dual enrollment (assuming that the college is on the quarter system, college calculus 4 will be multivariable calculus which is higher than high school calculus BC).
For French, what level college French is it, and how does it compare to what the college considers AP French as (in its AP credit chart)?
You can make similar comparisons for the other subjects like English and computer science.
However, some colleges (mainly highly selective private ones, but also the University of Michigan) are very stingy with transfer credit and placement for college credit earned while in high school. If you are applying to such schools, and decide to do the dual enrollment path, you may also want to take the duplicating AP tests. You will not get double credit, but the AP scores may give some credit and placement if your dual enrollment course work is not accepted.
On a college enrollment, you’ll work your way up to upper level courses higher than what AP courses go up to. You shouldn’t entirely ignore your AP classes, but focusing on your community college will prepare you and the course are shorter, as oppose to the year long AP courses. Just know that taking a rack of CC courses isn’t the same as APs because colleges are going to require to send in your college transcripts.
Will it look bad if I haven’t done any AP classes yet. Like what looks better on a college app? Should I just stick with dual?
I will be taking the equivalence of AP French, it’s called french 131 at my college
For math, the dual enrollment path will allow you to get to a higher level than the high school AP courses. If you choose the AP route, then you will have to take the dual enrollment college courses anyway the following year after completing calculus BC.
For French, if your college is what I think it is, French 131 is the 3rd quarter course, but it lists a 3 on AP French as equivalent to the 4th quarter course (4 on AP French = 5th quarter, and 5 on AP French = 6th quarter). So it is possible that the correct placement for you is a higher level course than the 3rd quarter course. Check with the college’s French department.
Ok thanks, I’m probably gonna take Calc 4 at my college, and then vector calculus/linear algebra. And then the rest ill do at my high school which is AP french, AP gov, and AP comp sci. Thanks a lot!
With respect to French (higher than 131) at the college versus AP French – do you know what kind of AP scores the AP French students usually get? If they usually get 5 scores, then the AP French course is probably equivalent to reaching the 6th quarter of college French. But if they struggle to get 3 scores, then it may just barely reach the equivalent of the 4th quarter of college French.
