So, within the span of about a week, I’ve received my SAT subject test scores and my AP scores. I did well on my subject tests, (Chem and US history both 790), but I only did OK on the corresponding tests in my AP classes (both 4s). Do colleges give more weight to AP scores or subject test scores? Especially for elite college admissions (I feel dirty saying that-_-)
Thanks for any advice!!
They give more weight to AP classes. Most colleges don’t care that much about SAT subject test. Those test won’t earn you any extra credit or exempt you from any classes. They might improve your odds of getting into that college, but the subject test aren’t that big of a deal to them.
For admissions, colleges look at SAT subject test scores, which many schools require or recommend. The AP scores have little to no effect on admissions, since they are used primarily for credit and placement. AP scores are optional on the application and are self-reported.
If you have 2 4’s, then that won’t really matter. I think AP scores matter if you got a 4.0, then proceeded to get 1’s and 2’s on the exams, which really shows that your courseload was not as rigorous as it seemed.
The very top schools will place a lot of value on strong Subject test scores. A 790 on US History test trumps a 4 on the U.S. History AP. For less selective colleges strong subject tests are still helpful
First of all congrats that’s awesome!! SAT II scores are more for the application process as for some schools you can send in 2 SAT II scores instead of an SAT. some schools, however, use the SAT IIs for placement in classes once you have been accepted to the school. AP scores are also used for this. Schools use AP scores for placement once you are in the school. The grade in the actual class will be more for the application process. As long as you are taking challenging classes for you and in an interview, for example, you can say how in this class you learned more about yourself as a student and a person and what you got out of the class, etc. I would check with the website of the school or look at the school on college board just to be sure the way the school handles both of these scores just to be safe. But you’re in a very good position so I would not worry too much. Good luck!!!
