1) Is it impossible to get a good apartment on June 1st? Does everyone really have to wait till moving day (Aug)? I’m going to be doing summer courses there too to ease my way into UCD.

2) If it’s not impossible to get an apt by June 1st… any words of caution? Where not to live.

3) If someone would like to recommend a place that me and my boyfriend (not a student) can move into that allows cats, has A/C, isn’t really noisy, good rent, and close to campus (on busline, or walking/bike distance)… that would be great.

It will probably be difficult to get an appartment by June 1st, however many places will let you take over a lease. If you take over a lease you would probably move in at the end of June rather than the beginning.

Not impossible, but your choices will be slim. It will be a lot easier to find a summer sub-let - starting after finals, so mid-June. Check craigslist.com for apartment openings and subleters. I managed to find an open one-bedroom in mid-July. My apartment complex, Tennis Club, does month-to-month, 6-month, and 12-month leases which is quite unusual for Davis - most just have the 12-month lease starting on Sep 1st. (That also means that if you are switching apartments you are homeless for a night - Aug 31-Sep 1st).

Go to visit the different apartment complexes before you sign a lease. Be sure to look for things like a dishwasher or air-conditioner, and the overall condition. Most places are alright, but there are some really crappy places out there. Ask about the laundry machines, internet options, pet policy etc.

Most apartment complexes are on a busline, or really close to it. The closer to campus the more expensive the housing though.

Considering that today is the anniversary of the Columbine killings and what just transpired at VT I find your sense of timing questionable and this posting in poor taste.

collegemom, i've always been a superstitious person and am easily frightened by living situations like this. i thought others seeking an apartment may like to know about the history of this apartment. there is no need to blast me.

nate cali: there is crime on every campus, but crime at UCD is very low. those articles say that that was the first homicide in 7 years, and that tends to be the case in davis-- any homicide is major news on campus because it almost never happens.

collegemom16: ...a homicide outside the man's south davis apartment really is nothing that can compare to columbine and VT, so i think it's unfair to even compare the two and blame nate cali for it.

yeah i understand davis is a really safe city. i'm not concerned for my safety at all especially since i am male. i was only expressing my fear of living in a complex where someone has died there. i'm a chicken when it comes to haunted stuff like that. i get scared very easily.

nate cali: Yup, I know about the murder that happened in this apartment complex, but I moved in anyway. I'm not even near the apartment it happened outside of. The murder could have happened anywhere in davis.. the guy that was killed wasn't a student, had recently moved from Oakland, and the gunman was from Oakland,... sounds like a targeted crime to me - just happened that it was here.
It's quite, plenty of parking, free cable tv, and rent is cheaper than most other places in town. Davis has such low crime rate, there is no "bad part of town".

Wow Pearl, your a brave person. Do you know what the average rate for a 2 bedroom apt in the Davis area currently is? My friend and I will start to look for a place to live sometime this summer, something that is within biking distance to campus.
