App State Financial Aid

I've been looking through the scholarships on the App State website, but a lot of them say "varied" under amount.

I am from a well respected private school out of state, and I have 4.4 GPA, 31 ACT (may retake to try and get higher), decent amount of community service (around 60 hrs or so), not many extra curriculars, but nearly all AP/advanced classes, and several academic awards. I'm hoping to major in Biology.

Is there any way I could get $10,000 or so in financial aid?

Are you asking about financial aid based on “financial need” (income/assets) or merit scholarships based on stats?

There’s no way we can know if you can get FA because we have no idea of what your family’s income/assets are.

Plus, most publics do NOT give their FA to OOS students. Some do give merit scholarships.

Do you know what your EFC is?

There are other schools that might give you good merit. What is your intended major?

My family’s financial situation is good. I’m looking for non-need merit based aid. I’m also in the top 5 of my class (out of about 140 students), and I intend on majoring in Biology.

Ok…

Then any scholarships that you might get will be based on your stats alone.

Since App St is vague with merit amounts, you can’t really count on getting any particular amount.

The OOS cost to attend App State for the 2011-12 school year with books and misc would be about $25k per year (maybe more, depending on transportation costs or personal expenses)

You say that your family’s financial situation is good. Have they said how much they will spend each year? If you don’t know, please ask. Sometimes students and parents have wildly different ideas about what parents will pay.

[Scholarship Search: Merit :: Admissions :: Appalachian State University](http://www.admissions.appstate.edu/scholarships/search/results/taxonomy%3A1)

Since App St’s website is vague, you can apply and see what you get. Maybe you’ll get lucky and get a nice scholarship! :)

However, if you really want some merit scholarships, you should **also **apply to some schools that will give you ASSURED scholarships for your stats. At least you’ll know for sure that those schools will give you scholarships. Those can be your financial safety schools.

I see that you’ll be majoring in bio. Do you have med school in your plans? If so, you may want to minimize your costs for undergrad to have more money for med school.

Thank you so much for your help! I’m planning on Dental school, so I am definitely going to talk with my parents soon about how much they will spend for my education.

Ah…dental school. Very good, but certainly expensive.

So, you may want to consider some options depending on what your parents will pay.
