I've been looking through the scholarships on the App State website, but a lot of them say "varied" under amount.

I am from a well respected private school out of state, and I have 4.4 GPA, 31 ACT (may retake to try and get higher), decent amount of community service (around 60 hrs or so), not many extra curriculars, but nearly all AP/advanced classes, and several academic awards. I'm hoping to major in Biology.

Is there any way I could get $10,000 or so in financial aid?

My family’s financial situation is good. I’m looking for non-need merit based aid. I’m also in the top 5 of my class (out of about 140 students), and I intend on majoring in Biology.

Then any scholarships that you might get will be based on your stats alone.

Since App St is vague with merit amounts, you can’t really count on getting any particular amount.

The OOS cost to attend App State for the 2011-12 school year with books and misc would be about $25k per year (maybe more, depending on transportation costs or personal expenses)

You say that your family’s financial situation is good. Have they said how much they will spend each year? If you don’t know, please ask. Sometimes students and parents have wildly different ideas about what parents will pay.

Since App St’s website is vague, you can apply and see what you get. Maybe you’ll get lucky and get a nice scholarship! :)

However, if you really want some merit scholarships, you should **also **apply to some schools that will give you ASSURED scholarships for your stats. At least you’ll know for sure that those schools will give you scholarships. Those can be your financial safety schools.

I see that you’ll be majoring in bio. Do you have med school in your plans? If so, you may want to minimize your costs for undergrad to have more money for med school.

Thank you so much for your help! I’m planning on Dental school, so I am definitely going to talk with my parents soon about how much they will spend for my education.
