<p>For the most part, the gift aid is based on your family’s income, with scholarships as the exception. Your family is expected to make an honest effort into paying for college. That means that your family has a high income, but didn’t set aside any money for your college fund. That’s too bad, you can’t expect the government to bail you out on that. Take up those loans and repay them back after you graduate.</p>
<p>It’s going to be extremely difficult to appeal your financial aid, especially when the budget is already tight for the entire UC system and especially UCR. I suggest looking for scholarships or awards. It seems like the way to go is to take out loans… If you can’t pay the entire amount each month (they divide it up and send you a bill), you can at least pay the interest so you can later only pay back exactly what you borrowed.</p>
