Appeal Question

Hey guys, Im a transfer student who applied to UCLA and got rejected. I did get accepted to irvine, but because of a few struggles I might not be able to attend irvine. That being said, I looked into the UCLA appeal system and sent in an appeal. My new information is hardships that I did not list what so ever in my original application as I tried to keep the app completely positive. The hardships pertain to my parents having illness and disorder, financial difficulties, myself having to working full time, and switching homes all at the same time of a particular semester in which the grades received in that semester extremely hurt my gpa. My grades after that went back to A's. I would like to ask if my basis for the appeal had good enough reason for them reconsider my decision? Any previous experiences on appeals or information would be great and would relieve a lot of stress :/ , Thank you.

If you do not mind me asking, what was your major, and what was your GPA? I’d like to compare it to those that got admitted in the Fall of 2013.

UCLA states that an appeal letter “must bring to light new academic and personal information, as well as information pertaining to extenuating circumstances, that had not been present in the application—information that clearly shows the student to be stronger than had been earlier evidenced.”

I would say that your situation fits this description. Be prepared to provide evidence of your claims if asked. I think you have a good chance of getting your rejection overturned. Good luck.

Thank you @cayton! Hearing that helps a lot, and I do have documentation for everything.

@tik1127 my overall gpa was 3.3 for sociology, but if it wasn’t for that one semester I would have had a gpa of 3.67-71, which is a huge jump.

Okay, viewing the 2013 Profile for Admitted Transfer Student, the AVG GPA that got admitted as Pre-Sociology Major was 3.74, the AVGP GPA that enrolled was right around 3.71.

Keep in mind, these are just numbers. UCLA will look at other aspects, I hope your appeal goes through.

@only1withpower‌ I’m a Sociology major transferring to UCLA. My GPA is 3.63, so minus that one semester you’re better than me. I saw people with near 4.0’s getting rejected for the major, so it makes me think they are really looking deeper than the numbers. Good luck. I think you have a good shot. Keep us posted!

@tik1127 @2016candles thanks guys really appreciate the support!

And @2016candles, congratulations on the acceptance! I did list a few sentences about why I believe I can make a difference in the activities community with my experience in overcoming specific struggles, so we’ll see how it goes. My hopes are high as, part of the reason I would like to attend is to stay in L.A to watch over my parents
