Appeal, Settle, or Try Again?

I’m a rising transfer student who enrolled in a CC due to poor grades at my first institution straight out of high school. Unfortunately, while my GPA at my CC is pretty good, my first institution grades make my transferable/total GPA terrible(it’s less than 3.0 which seems to be a minimum), making it impossible for me to transfer anywhere decent(or apply to any internships or scholarships, both of which are crucial for this summer).

This is my transfer semester, I only got into one out of five colleges I applied to(and that one only accepted me because I’m part of a program at my CC with priority admissions for that school). I considered appealing the decision to the school I think I would do my best at, but I’m an engineering major and my essay skills leave a lot to be desired, nor do I have any new information for the admissions people to review.

I’m also considering simply settling for the one school that said yes, but I have no desire to go there-I’ve been there, I’ve visited their facilities, I’ve met their faculty, and I don’t feel like it’s a right fit for me.

However, I also can’t just stay at my CC for another year and hope for a GPA boost, since there are literally no more classes I can take to get my GPA up-I’ll be leaving my CC with an AST in Physics and I’ve taken every available pre req course already.

Would I be able to stay at my settler college and try to apply to my preferred school again this fall, or should I just suck it up and hope I can get into my preferred school for grad school? Would it be better to just take a gap year, work, and reapply?

Take the offer. Laugh all the way to the bank with your engineering degree and take a nice vacation the first year you get paid for it. It really don’t matter in the larger scheme of things where you went. I’d just consider myself ucky that I got into one if four rejected me. Do your best there, go to work a couple of years and you can look at grad schools.

^ Whole-heartedly agree. You’re talking about just two years. Get it done.

^Agree with the above posts.

You are just two years away from finishing your engineering degree? Then go! Don’t worry about the school. You need to finish your degree and move into the work force. A lot of people never finish their 4 year degeees out of a CC so stay on track and be pleased you were accepted. This is a good opportunity.

Unless you do something truly amazing, a gap year likely won’t make much of a difference in terms of where you get admitted and there is always a chance you won’t go back to school. Finish your 4 year degree.
