appealing an SAT II score...(How should I tell Harvard)?

Hi CCers

I am getting a hand-scoring of my October 2009 Math 2C exam. I scored 620 and I am almost positive my score was not that bad. The problem is Harvard requests scores be sent before the deadline and the hand-scoring verification won't be completed until after the deadline. I could send the 620 and hope the score changes, but I don't want to risk it. Should i tell them that another score may arrive after the deadline? However, if I did that, I would be indicating I have a bad score and since H uses score choice, I don't want to do that. I am taking the Jan. 23 SAT so my testing won't be complete until mid February (scores will arrive then), so I don't think it will delay my app. but it would be confusing. BTW, my 3 other SAT IIs are 770, 710 and 650 (first time taking Math 2 and with no prep; thats why my 2nd score is so odd).

What should I do?

My two cents = Whatever scores you decide to send, and/or when…I would not recommend telling them you’re having a rescore. The chances of a successful rescore are VERY VERY small. It can happen, you know that or you wouldn’t have tried it. (We did it on my D’s APUSH exam where she got a “3”!..no change…though she got a 750 on her USHIST SAT II, and a great class grade with a great and tough teacher, she felt she “aced” it). Her other SAT IIs were 780/750. Her SAT was 740/740/730.

Math 2 is very hard, and does have a big curve, but…my D only got a 700 on that.

I give you these stats just to show that the 620 is very possibly/probably correct. It’s not really possible to compare your SAT grades to your SAT IIs because they’re curved, and it’s a completely different set of kids who take these tests. Virtually everyone who WANTS to attend any college takes the SAT I. It’s not the same math as the SAT II math 2 (you know that, of course), but it’s also NOT the same testing pool. This is stacked with Ivy hopefuls and top of class kids, with some “average” kids thrown in. Even of those who take SAT IIs, many don’t take math as their first or second option…so… You see where I’m going. Statistically, your score actually looks pretty much dead on.

BUT…good luck to you in your rescore, I do hope it’s successful. I just don’t think it would look very good for you to say to Harvard that you’re questioning it…because we know the odds are so low and I just get a feelling that wouldn’t put you in the best light, especially if/when it doesn’t change. Best to you though.

Could you use score choice now, not send it, and if it changes, send it in then?

You can send scores in after the Jan. 1 deadline. Harvard accepts SAT’s in January. Maybe you should just not send any scores until after you take the January SAT. But check with admissions to make sure this is okay. Just tell them you are taking the math SAT II then, nothing else.

I think, honestly, that asking for a rescore will look a little excessive. I know that my kids’ SAT’s varied by 100 points from test to test. I agree that it is probably not a great idea to tell Harvard you are doing this :)

Make an a phone call to admissions about their policy with scores: you don’t have to give a name. Just ask if you can send all scores in, after the January test. Or have you already has some scores sent?

I would relax a little on this too: I know someone who got a 580 in math and got in, though this person had a hook. Harvard says, explicitly, that it is not looking for people who excel in absolutely everything. The admissions office comments, on their site, that they are next to Howard Gardner’s office (Multiple Intelligence expert), for a reason!

WAIT! Do we have to send all SAT II scores before the deadline? What if you only have 2 scores at this time? I thought they accepted Jan scores.

Sci-Fry
Read compmom…Yes, they take January scores. OP is looking to get SOME of hers/his in before the 1/1 deadline. But it’s NOT necessary. They will definitely look at the January SAT or February ACT.

I can’t recall which school it was…one of the colleges, I think an Ivy, asked that you please TRY to include one score by their deadline, so they have something to lead them. But that they would still look at later scores submitted. But I don’t remember if that was Harvard.

Ah ok, that’s fine then, thanks. I’ve already got an SAT score as well as two subject tests that I’m happy with.

I’m also getting a rescore on a test. Like what R124687 said, I already submitted all my scores. The chance of a changed score is very low. If my score is changed, then I can still resubmit my scores to all my colleges since it will be January by then.
The only thing I’m worrying about is the cost. Maybe I can yell and blame Collegeboard on the phone for an hour or two. Then they might send my changed score for free since, after all, it would be their fault.
