Has anyone here appealed their financial aid award & been successful? I'm seriously considering attending Tulane but my parents are worried about the $47,000 cost. I was accepted in December & just got my financial aid reward today of $5,000 in loans.

This knocks the price down to $42,000 & my parents believe they can only pay $20,000. I received more financial aid from Indiana, & they are not even half the cost of Tulane.

I thought Tulane was supposed to be encouraging students to attend by being generous with financial aid as they know they will have a lower yield because of Katrina, not discouraging them.

Definitely appeal, you have nothing to lose. You should call finaid (not your parents). I bet there'll be more money when those who received scholarships turn down their offers of acceptance.

yea man (girl?) def appeal... according to Tulane, they are alotting the same amount of financial aid/merit money as in past yrs, although they did boost the Founders award (which I think you should be right in line w/) by 2k to make it 18k-sounds like that is exactly what you need to attend... the admissions office has said that Founders typically follows the criteria of top 10% of class/1350+ SAT (obviously there are some exceptions-myself being one of them-but overall I think looking at posts this is more or less the rule). I don't know your M/V but your /2400 suggests you should be right in that range... I would have your guidance office call admissions and advocate strength of hs if you dont quite fall into the top 10%... gl pal

btw, it isnt necessarily a good assumption to assume the yield will go down cuz of Katrina (altho yield is down across the board at schools due to inflated apps)... I think the school gains as many interested kids as they lose... in the end, tulane still lags behind the duke/emory/vandy trio of elite southern schools, but w/ admissions getting exceedingly competitive, I believe there will be a lot of capable students coming down to Tulane as a result of a good merit package and the opportunities (new and old) that the school has to offer

I would guess the same. Also, I can't find anything convincing in faculty and other factors having to do with actual educational quality to suggest that Tulane should be ranked much below the triad you mention, certainly not at the undergrad level. The ranking exists, but everything I've delved into suggests that Tulane undergrad is underrated, and that factors such as student test scores and the like via-
