Appealing Rutgers Scholarships

I’m quite shocked by how little I was offered by RBS despite getting into HC. My family is unable to provide any funds to pay for my college education, so it’s going to be all on me. Does anyone have any experience appealing their financial aid package? What’s the best way to do it?

I wasnt given any email and got into RBS. Does this mean Im screwed?

@MrElonMusk are you in state? You got a good merit scholarship. If you’re instate, it’s almost full tuition.

@jnkam24 Yes, I’m in-state. What do you mean by “almost full tuition”

@MrElonMusk in-state tuition +fees is around $14,600 (don’t have exact number right now). You said you got a $13,000 scholarship. I would say that’s pretty awesome. Can you commute?

@MrElonMusk I too received at $13,000 scholarship offer from both RBS and SAS each through the HC. I don’t know if there is any way to appeal for a larger scholarship but from the information they included, it seemed as though that was about half of the instate tuition and housing fees.

@jnkam24 I’m gonna have to live at the HC, so we’re talking another $14,000. Like I’ve said, college is all on me so I need as much aid as I can get.

If this is a need-based aid, you’d have to demonstrate that they failed to take something important into account, or that new financial circumstances have arisen since the time your applied. The fact that college is “all on you” is not relevant to the financial aid office, unless you are at least 24 years old or married.

@brantly Yes, I can demonstrate that there are new financial circumstances. What frustrates me the most is that for SAS and SEBS, they didn’t offer any aid whatsoever. The fact that the FAFSA EFC was completely disregarded when creating the financial aid package makes me question why they even need it in the first place.

@MrElonMusk They only need it to determine if you qualify for any state or federal aid, such as Pell, which obviously you must not. What was your EFC? Rutgers doesn’t meet need in the slightest. Like I said, you have a sweet deal there and should commute if you can’t afford to live on campus.

You don’t understand how financial aid works. Rutgers is not a college that meets full need. Only the most elite colleges, which have huge endowments, meet full need. The Fafsa EFC represents the MINIMUM you will have to pay, not the exact amount you will pay. A more accurate representation of what you’d have to pay is the college’s Net Price Calculator.

If you have basis for an appeal (new financial circumstances), then file an appeal. POLITELY. Your parents’ unwillingness to pay for college is not a basis for appeal. Unless they lost their jobs, your house burnt down, or they have significant medical expenses that just cropped up.
