I recently got accepted to UCR however on their site under provisonal admissions it states that I would need to finish chem 2 and calc 2 w/ a C or better.
I called and told them that Im probably going to be dropping calculus and they told me that they could rescind my application and that I could appeal and state that I will be retaking it over the summer but that my chances are very slim

I really dont know what to do do you think they'll actually rescind my application all because of 1 pre req? Also how does appealing work and has anyone ever had success with it?

My gpa is at a 3.17 currently (according to UCR's website)

yes they can and most likely will rescind your application over one pre req.
you were notified that your admission was contingent upon the completion of whatever courses they told you. there’s no way around that.

Pretty sure that they will rescind you. Talk to your professor, make it clear that you are willing to do whatever it takes to pass the class. I’m sure that if you’re motivated enough you can do it, by going to office hours and getting extra help, study groups, etc.
Good luck!

There is no way i can pass the class. I failed the first 2 tests and I missed the 3rd test because I was sick and she has a no makeup policy at all. There are only 4 tests and a final. So basically I have 3 F’s already out of the 4 tests. I have to drop the class.

Is there seriously no way I can just take the class over the summer? I found a better teacher and everything I cannot believe that just 1 class is stopping me. I really want to go to UCR

yes I know it sucks. but that’s how it is…
beg your teacher right now. tell him/her is there anyway you can get a C in the class. say that you got accepted to a university and only that class is stopping you.
I would seriously cry and beg to the teacher no joke because staying another year at a CC for one class sounds horrible
good luck

It seems like you’re going to have to stay another year. Pass Cal 2 during Fall and try again next year.

I know it’s harsh and we know you really want to go to UCR, but you are not going to pass a class that is required for your major. Why would you want to go to UCR and take harder classes when Calc 2 is giving you trouble?

@mermaker The only reason Im not going to pass is because I made the mistake of taking it w/ a really difficult teacher. Im 100% positive I could pass it this summer if I took it again since im planning on sitting in on the class and taking notes still. I just wish theyd cut me a deal and let me do that but the admissions councilor i spoke to barely told me anything she just kept saying “Oh well yeah maybe you’ll get rescinded I mean most likely.” She didnt even listen when I asked if I could take it over the summer ugh

Also, do you think i have a shot at ucsb? I believe I have their calc requirements completed and most of the other pre reqs except organic chem and one of the physics. I wouldnt be so mad about ucr rescinding me as long as I had a shot at another school. (I havent gotten any news yet from any other uc’s)

I know this may come off as a bit harsh but I don’t think you’ll be attending UCR with your circumstances as of now. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people use the “oh it wasn’t my fault the professor sucks” or “this professor is way too hard” excuse. The material for Calc 2 will be the same no matter what professor you take, it’s just presented in a different way. If you’re struggling with the difficulty of the material presented, why didn’t you get help from the professor during office hours? Why didn’t you spend more time studying the material? And please don’t tell me that you’ve tried your best and gave it all your effort. Getting an F on your first test should have alerted you that you needed to put more effort into the class. Getting an F on the second test showed that you didn’t really care at all. If you really wanted to attend UCR, I think you would have stepped up your game and put in way more effort into getting a passing grade. My case in point: stop making excuses and do what you have to do to accomplish your goal.

“Im 100% positive I could pass it this summer if I took it again since im planning on sitting in on the class and taking notes still.”

What? We you not sitting in class and taking notes? Or did you mean even though you’re going to withdraw from your class, you still attend to take notes?

Can you still drop or withdraw? When’s the deadline?

According to the image you linked in another thread, it sounds like if you can complete the course during the summer, you may have a chance. However, as a caveat, I think it refers to intended summer courses you may have stated on your application.

I tried, there are 50 other students in the class and trying to get help from the teacher is near impossible. Her office hours are constantly booked. I could never get one so I hired a tutor and got tutoring 2-4 hours each week. Still failed. The teacher literally taught 1 thing then put something different on the test. Yeah it is my fault for not studying harder but I do have other classes i have to pay attention to as well which are also just as difficult.
Also Ive taken max units allowed before during a summer session (statistics and a bio class) and I got A’s in both. I can pull off just calc.

@SFS Rules No I mean that even after dropping the class Im going to still come to the class and take notes as if I was still a student in the class. I have until april 19th to drop the class. And yeah I know it says you can submit summer classes however I called the UCR counselor and she said it wouldnt matter if I took it during the summer they could still rescind my admission. Im gonna try calling her again and see if I cant beg her to let me try.

Same thing happened to my friend last year. He got accepted to UCR and when he failed organic chem, they rescinded his application. He had to wait until the next year to apply again.

I have been at UCR for two years and honestly the classes are too easy here. Don’t let anyone here bash you for failing a class, ESP calculus. I failed AP stat in HS, and UCR told me it was okay. So there is still hope (though you are diff bc you are transferring). They are lenient but perhaps much has changed in two years.

If I give my SIR to CSUN but then UCR gives me my admission back over the summer for finishing calculus, Could I still SIR to UCR and cancel it with csun?
